It will be noted that the upper hinge construction permits the erection of partitions and swinging doors (such as are found in public toilets and the like) in which the top line 39 orn adjoining partitions are flush or level with the upper line of the doors (and,
therefore'leaves no structure to which a hinge labove the door line may be attached) as well as eliminating the necessity for a hinge above thel'door line which is unsightly and preaks the desirable eiect of a straight door ine.
Obviously the invention is not limited to the details of the illustrative construction since these mayk be variously modified. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all features o the invention be used conjoint? since various features may be used to a vantage in different combinations and subcombinations.
Having described our invention, we claim:
1. A hinge construction of the character described for swinging doors comprising in combination, a pintle holder carrylng apintle adapted to be mounted inside the rear edge of the door, said holdery being spaced from said pintle to provide a clear space around .said pintle, a hinge member provided with means for connectingl the same to the door frame, said hinge member projecting substantially beyond the edge of the supporting means to position it beyond the edge of the door opening and to extend into the area of the door for pivotal connection to said pintle, and a shield surroundingI said pintle and said clear space to provide a closure for said space in all positions of the door, said shield having an opening to permit the passage of the hinge member into its interior.
2. A hinge construction of the character described for swingin doors comprising in combination, a pintle older carrying a pintle adapted to be mounted inside the rear edge of the door, said holder being spaced from said pintle to rovide a clear space around said pintle, a inge member provided with means for connecting the same to the door frame, said hin member projecting substantially beyon he edge of the supporting means to position it beyond the edge of the door opening and to extend into the area of the door for pivotal connection to said pintle, said pintle and its holder being of substantially greater height than said hinge member to .permit said hinge member to slide vertically relative to said pintle, and a shield coaxial with said pintle about which the door is adapted to swing for closing the space about said pintle.

A hinge construction of the character described for swinging doors comprising in combination, a pintle holder carrying a pintle adapted to be mounted inside the rear edge of the door, said holder being spaced from said pintle to provide a clear space around said pintle, a hinge member provided with means for connecting the same to the door frame, said hinge member projecting substantially beyond the edge of the supporting means to position it beyond the edge of the door opening and to extend into the area of the door for pivotal connection'to said plntle, said'pintle and its holder being of substantially greater height than said hinge member to permit said hinge member to slide vertically relative to said pintle, and a cylindrical shield coaxial with said pintle and having a slot therein to permit it to move vertically relative to said hinge member.
4. A hinge construction of the character described, for swinging doors comprising in combination, a pintle holder carrying a pintle adapted to be mounted inside the rear edge of the door, said holder being spaced from saidpintle to provide a clear space around said pintle, a hinge member provided with door frame embracing flanges by which the hinge is supported said hinge member projecting substantially beyond the edge of thc supporting means to position it beyond the edge of the door opening and to extend into the area of the door for pivotal connection to said pintle, said hinge member having a narrowed shank and a bore in its extremity through whichsaid pintle passes and being of less height than said intle so ,as to be vcrticall slidable relative y thereto, and a cylindrical shield coaxial with said pint-le and having a radius substantially equal to the distance the pintle is inset from the edge of the door, said shield having a vertical slot to receive said narrowed shank and to permit relative vertical movement of said shank in said slot.
5. A swinging door hinge for doors adapted to swing to both sides of the door opening comprising in combination, a hinge pivot adapted to be seated in a recess in the rear edge of the door to space said pivot inwardly of the side edge of said door, a supporting hinge connection operative on said pivot and adapted to be connected with the door support1 and a cylindrical housing about said pivot and lilling in said recess to maintain the same closed for all positions of said door.

A hinge of the character described comprising in combination, a mounting for a hinge pintle including means for attaching the pintle to a door, a hinge pintle carried by said mounting s'o as to be spaced a distance inside the rear edge of the door, a hinge wing pivotally connected to said pintle und substantially shorter than the pintle to provide vert-ical sliding movement of .said wing on said pintle, and a cylindrical housing concentric with said pintle end of a radius substantially equal to said distance and covering lthe connection of said wing therewith.

A swinging door hinge for doors adapted to swing to both sides of the door opening and having a small vertical travel vduring their swinging movements comprising in combination a hinge pintle adapted to be seated in a recess in the rear edge of the door so as to be spaced inwardly of said rear edge, a supporting hinge connection longitudinally slidable on said pivot and adapted to be connected with said door support, and a shield associated with said pintle adapted to be seated in said recess to close the latter in all positions of the door.

A swinging door hinge of the character described comprising in combination a hinge pintle, a pintle frame open at the sides and the rear edge and carrying said pintle inset from the rear edge of the frame, ahinge member pivoted to said pintle and vertically slidable thereon and having door frame engaging members extending beyond the area of said frame, and a cylindrical shield coaxial with said pintle and filling said frame and having a slot through which said hinge member extends to permit said hinge member to slide vertically relative to said shield, said hinge member and shield being rotatable about said pintle.

A swinging door hinge of the character described comprising in combination a hinge pintle having a supporting frame adapted to be set into a recess in the rear edge of the door to place the pintle inside said rear edge, a supporting hinge having means for attachment to a door frame and having a member operable on said pintle, said pintle frame being open at the sides and rear edge to allow clearance for the said hinge member upon the swinging of the .door and a cylindrical shield whose radius -is substantially of the door to place the pintle inside said rear edge, a supporting hinge having means for attachment to a door frame and having a member operable on said pintle, said pintle frame being open at the sides and rear edge to allow clearance for the said hinge member upon the swinging of the door, and a c lindrical shield surrounding and spaced rom said pintle'to close said recess in the door.

A swinging door hinge construction for doors adapted to swing to both sides of the door opening comprising in combination, a hinge structure whose axis is adapted to be located within the area of the door and spaced a distance from the rear edge of the door, said hinge structure including. a cylindrical surface coaxial with the hinge axis and having a radius substantially equal to said distance, and a supporting hinge member rotatable about said axis and vertically slidable relatively thereto and having support-1 ing portions adapted to be connected to the door frame.` y

A swinging door hinge construction for doors adapted to swing to both sides of the door opening comprising in combination, a hinge structure whose axis is adapted to be located within the area of the door and spaced a distance from the rear edge of the door, said hinge structure includin a cylindrical surface coaxial with the hlnge axis and having a radius substantiall equal to said distance, and a supporting hinge member rotatable about said axis and having supporting portions adapted to be connected to the door frame. l
