Description

S. C. BATCHELOR.
k FIG-1.
f /NVE/vroR, @f
UNITED STATES PATENT-OFFICE'.
SOLOMON C. BATCHELOR, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND W.v C. DAVIS St CO.
sToVE-DooRs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,119, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. C. BATOHELOR, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stove-Doors; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompa nying drawings, making part ot'A this specilication. l
This invention relates to an improved form of hinge for stove-doors, capable of being cast complete without the necessity of subsequent fitting, and which is practically airtight when the door is closed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view representing' part of a stove-plate and door detached. Fig. 2 is an axial section through the hinges. Fig. 3 shows, by perspective view and section, a modified form of my improvement.
A represents a portion of a stovefplate. B is a door uushipped from its hinges.
The hinge-sockets consist of cup-like projections C from the plate, which, on their rear sides, are open to the interior of the stove, so as to be easily molded. in green sand without any previously-prepared core.
The front portion of the top edge of each socket is a level, l, in the plane of the under side of the rear portion, 3, also level, the two being joined by an inclined portion, 2.
The pintle D of each hinge has a collar, E, whose under side is formed with two level and an intervening slope, I II III, corresponding to those of the socket.
Several useful objects are accomplished by the above particular form of hinge. For example, it enables a parting to be effected at the mouth of the socket in molding, which dispenses with the necessity of dry-sand cores at those parts. When the door is shut the collar E serves to eectually close the mouth ofthe socket. In opening the door the sloping portions 2 and II act to lift the door, and enable it to close automatically by simple gravity.
A lug, F, projecting from the face of the stove-plate, a little above the upper hinge, serves to prevent the door being lifted accidentally oft'of its hinges in the act of disengaging'the catch.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the face of the stove-plate being recessed or curved back enables the socket to be molded with a lower elevation of sand from its rear side.
I am aware that hinges for common doors have before been made with inclined bearings to make lthem self-closing. This invention, therefore, I do not broadly claim.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- 1. A stove-door hinge composed of openbacked sockets C, with the described-stepped upper portions, in combination with the corre;
spondingly-stepped collar E of the pintle, as and for the purpose explained.
2. In combination with a stove-door hinge constructed as above specified, the lug F, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
