To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Lori) Seances, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stove-Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and on act description such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to stove doors, and particularly to stove doors of the type shown in my prior Patent No. 1,064.-,388 dated June 10th, 1913, wherein the hinge of the door are concealed.

The door shown in my said prior patent is provided with hinge members or arms that project inwardly through openings in the door frame and said hinge members are provided at their inner ends with integral stops or abutments that strike against the inside of the door frame, and thus limit the outward increment of the door when the door is opened. The openings in the frame through which the hinge members on th door project are wider than said hinge members so as to permit the door to be moved laterally with relation to the frame, and thus bring the integral stops of said hinge members into alinement with portions of said frame against which said stops strike. After the door has been positioned properly in the frame, a locking device is attached to the frame so as to prevent the door from moving laterally into an improper posit-ion, or in other words, from moving laterally far enough to carry the stops on the hinge members out of alinement with the portions of the frame against which said stops strike when the door is opened.

The object of my present invention is to provide a concealed hinge stove door that embodies all of the good features of the door shown in my said prior patent, but which can be manufactured at a lower cost and assembled more easily.

To this end I have devised a stove doorwhich is so constructed that it is not necessary to attach a locking device to the frame to hold the door in operative position.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevational View of a portion of a cooking range whose warming ovens or compartments are equipped with concealed hinge stove doors constructed in accordance with my invention;

Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention. A designates a stove door whose lower e portion is hinged to a door frame 'i re door A is so proportioned that it laps over the portions of the frame B adjacent the edges of the door opening in the frame, and the door is provided with hinge members which are so designed that they are completely concealed or hidden from view *hcn the door is in its closed position. In the form of my invention herein shown, the door is provided with hinge members 1. which consist of downwardly curved arms that project inwardly from the lower edge of the door through openings in the door frame B. The hinge members 1 are provided on their under sides with curved surfaces that are preferablv concentric with the point where showing the door the lower edge of the door terminates when the door is in its closed position, and said curved surfaces cooperate with station hinge members 3 or curved surfaces on the door frame that are located at the lower edges of the openings 2 in the frame. lVhen the door is opened and closed the hinge members 1 011 the door slide over the ci'irved surfaces 3 on the door frame in the manner described in my said prior patent.

The frame B is provided at its upper side with a hook t that cooperates with a lug 5 on the door to hold the door in its closed position, and as it is necessary to raise the door to disengage the lug 5 from the hook l, when it is desired to open the door, 1 form the openings 2 in the door-frame large enough to provide sufficient vertical play for the hinge members 1 on the door to permit the door to be raised bodily in a vertical plane when it is closed or nearly closed. The inner end portions of the arms or hinge members 1 on the deer are so proportioned that they correspond approximately to the depth or height of the openings 2 in the frame so as to eliminate excessive play or tionary portions on the frame B lost motion between the cooperating hinge members on the door and door frame when the door is in its open position, as shown in Fig. 4. The outward movement of the door is limited by means of stops 6 and 7 on the hinge members 1 that strike against stawhen the tloor is opened.

The width of the openings '2 in the frame correspond approximately to the width of the hinge members 1 so as to prevent the door from moving laterally in either direction in relation to the frame 13, and in the preferred form of my invention, as herein shown, the openings 2 are in the form of ogen-ended slots that are formed in the inner edge portion of the frame 15, so that one of the hinge members on the door can he slipped sidewise into its cooperating opening in the frame during the operation of mounting the door in the frame, as hereinafter described. The vertical edges or sides of the openings or slots 2 in the f 'ame thus act as stops or abutments 9 which cooperate with the hinge members 1 on the door so as to prevent the door from moving laterally in either direction. One of the hinge members on the door is preferably provided with an integral stop 6, and the other hinge member on the door is provided with a. removable or detachable stop 7 herein shown as a screw that is scr wed into the upper side of its cooperating hinge member adjacent the inner end of same.

In mounting the door, the hinge member 1 that is provided. with the integral stop 6, is first slipped sidewise into its cooperating opening in the door frame, and the door is then moved inwardly toward the frame so that the other hinge member thereon will enter its cooperating opening in the frame. The removable stop 7 is then arranged in operative position on its hinge member. While I prefer to provide one of the hinge members on the door with an integral stop, and the other hinge member with a removable stop, it will, of course, be understood that the same result could be accomplished in other ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The door is preferably provided with means which prevents the door from sticking or jamming in case a careless person pulls the door in the direction tending to move the lower edge of the door upwardly and outwardly away from the door frame during the operation of closing the door, said means being the same as the means used for this purpose in my said prior patent, and consists of supplementary stops or auxiliary stops 6 on the hinge members 1, that project downwardly below the lower Copies of this patent may edge of the openings 2 in the frame when the door is opened, as shown in Fig. a.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the door lerein described embodies all of the good features of the door shown in my said prior patent, but it can be manufac tured at a lower cost, and mounted in the door frame more easily, owing to the fact that it is not necessary to attach a fastening device to the frame so as to prevent the door from moving laterally with relation to the frame, the door being prevented from moving laterally by means of the integral stops or abutments 9 on the frame, which bear against the sides of the hinge members 1 on the door.

While I have herein shown my invention embodied in a stove door that swings about a horizontal axis, it will, of course, be understood that my invention is applicable to a stove door that swings about a vertical axis.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A stove, comprising a door frame provided with adoor opening, a pair of horizontally-disposed, open-ended slots formed in the side edges of the opening in said frame diametrically opposite each other and adjacent the lower edge of said opening, a door provided at its lower edge with a pair of hinge members that project rearwardly from the door through the slots in said frame, the outer side face of each of said hinge members bearing against the inner end of the slot through which said member passes, thereby preventing the door from moving laterally in either direction with relation to the door frame, an integral stop on the inner end of one of said hinge members that bears against the inner side of the door frame when the door is open, and thus prevents said hinge member from moving forwardly out of its slot, and a removable stop on the other hinge member that performs a similar function, the hinge member with the integral stop being adapted to be inserted sidewise into its cooperative slot, and the other hinge member being adapted to have its end introduced in its slot and moved rearwardly through same prior to the operation of connecting the removable stop to said hinge member.
