Be it known that we, JAMES F. WILLIAMS and CHARLES MUSTIN, of Vincennes, county of Knox, and State of Indiana, have invented acertain new and useful AttachmentforTrousers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple means to hold the upper part or waist of trousers open when not in use, to enable a man to put them on in the least possible time, and to close and fasten them rapidly and securely. It is especially advantageous for firemen and others in like positions of duty.

The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the front upper portion of a pair of trousers with the device in place and the waist of the trousers open. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the attachment by itself. Fig. 3 is an inside elevation of a portion of the attachment inverted. Fig. 41 is a vertical section of the device in the position shown in Fig. 3 on the line 4 4 of said figure. Fig. 5 is a detailed View of a portion of the device in its upright position, with parts broken away and in section to show the pawl construction. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the device on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.

Referring now to the details of what is shown in the drawings, 10 represents the upperpart of a pair of trousers. The attachment constituting this invention is secured by threads or stitching 11 to the waistband of the trousers, so as to be held permanently.

The attachment consists of a metal casing or guide 12, formed with a curve, so as to conform substantially to the waist. The strip 13 is formed of metal with a similar curvature and is slidable in the casing. The casing is provided with perforated lips 14, whereby it is stitched to the waist ofthe trousers. At the front end of the casing a perforated lip 15 is turned inward and backward, as shown, whereby it can be secured on the inside of its inner end with a stud or pin 20, that moves in said grooveway 18. This grooveway does not extend entirely to the front end of the casing 12, but, as shown, nearly to the box-like enlargement 17, so that at the termination of the grooveway the wall of the casing 12 serves as a stop to engage the stud 6 20 and limit the outward movement of the strip 13, so as to prevent its entire removal. Said strip has at its outer end an inturned perforated lip 21, whereby it is secured by stitches to the other side of the trousers opposite to the side to which the casing is secured. Preferably the casing is secured. to the left side and the plate to the right. The trousers are therefore closed by pushing the strip 13 from the position shown in Fig. 1 into the easing 12 as far as it will go. The turned outer end of the strip will move to the right, as shown in Fig. 2, until it abuts against the curved portion of the lip 15 and will bring the two ends of the waistband of the trousers snugly together. The trousers are held closed by the pawl 23 engaging teeth or rack 24: on the upper edge of the strip 13, as appears plainly in Fig. 5. The pawl there extends through an opening in the top of the box-like construction 17 and is pivoted, to its side walls by the pin 25, so that its inner end will engage the teeth 24 0f the rack when pushed down by the flat spring 26. The trousers are opened by bearing down on the outer end of the pawl 25, and thus releasing it from the teeth 24 of the rack, then drawing the strip 13 outward. It is therefore seen that with this attachment to trousers they can be held when not in use with the top open, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby they oan quickly be put on. When put on, they can quickly be closed by merely pushing in the strip 13 to its limit, and the pawl 23 will automatically lock the strip 13 in its inward position.

It is observed that the metal casing 12 extends only to one front edge of the trousers and the notches on the strip 13 extend to the other front edge, so that the two front edges of the trousers may be brought up against each other.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with a pair of trousers, of a longitudinally-extending metal casing secured to the waistband on one side of the trousers and extending to one front edge thereof, a metal strip longitudinally slidable in said casing and secured at its outer end to the waistband on the other side of the trousers at the front, means for preventing the 3. An attachment for trousers comprising a casing, perforated lips connected therewith for securing it to the waistband of the trousers, a longitudinally-extending groovewayin the wall of said casing that terminates before reaching the end thereof, a box-like construction secured to the front end of the casing, a metal strip longitudinally slidable in said casing with one edge toothed, means on the outer end of said strip for securing it to the waistband of the trousers, a pin on said strip within said casing that moves in said grooveway for preventing the complete withdrawal of said strip, a pawl pivotally mounted in said box-like construction with one end extending outward, and a spring for holding the outer end of said pawlin engagement with the teeth of said strip.
