To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ABRAHAM HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps for Suspenders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains t0 make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clasps and more particularly to a clasp applicable for use on suspenders whereby the use of buttons may be eliminated on the devices with which the Suspenders are adapted to coperate.

A further object of the invention resides in providing a clasp which is also applicable to other uses than that aforementioned but which in any use may be quickly and readily applied and removed when desired.

A still further object resides in providing a clasp which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.

Vith these and other objects in view my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application: Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention and applied to use: Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof: Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same: Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section therethrough, as seen 0n line lr-4, Fig. l: Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the clasp in its ineffective position: Fig. 6 is a transverse section as seen on line 6 6, Fig. 1: and, Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the clasp proper, removed In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which l indicates a body plate formed of metal or other material bent upon itself to form the front and rear portions 2 and 3 respectively. At the looped portion of this body 1 which forms the portions 2 and 3, said latter portions abut one another as indicated at 4 and the rear portion 3 continuing from this contacting or abutting portion is offset as indicated at 5 whereby to position said portion or plate section 3 in spaced relation to the front plate like section 2 of the device. This abutting portion 4f of the plate like sections of the body is provided witha slot indicated at 5 through which is passed the tab or tape 6 of a suspender or the like so that the open end of the U-shaped body which is formed in the manner above described, forms the lower or receiving end of the device.

The front plate section or the like 2 of this body is cut out to form an opening 7, the lattertapering smaller toward its lower end, for a purpose to be hereinafter and more particularly set forth. This opening 7 is somewhat triangular in design the side walls of which are arcuately designed.

The rear plate like section 3 of this body l is provided about centrally with a vertical slot 8 which continues from a point adjacent the lower end of the plate 3 to the offset portion 5 thereof. The side edges of the plate like section 3 continuing from the offset portion 5 to the lower edge thereof are peint forwardly to provide flanges or the The aforementioned body 1 forms a support or coperating portion for my clasp which is indicated as 10. This clasp 10 is generally of L-shaped design formed preferably of a single strip of metal and at the junction of the arms thereof are provided the integral and laterally extending arms l1, the extreme free ends of which are reduced and pivotally received in the flanges 9 of the plate like section 3. Thus it will be seen that this clasp proper is pivotally supported in the rear plate like section of the body member and is so ldisposed asvto permit the longer arm section indicated as 12 to project through the lslot S of the plate like section 3 while the shorter arm section which is indicated as 13 in the drawingvis adapted to project through the opening 7 in the plate like section 2 of the body.

The clasp proper is so pivoted on the body as to permit the upper end of the longer arm l2 to terminate at the o'set portion 5 of the plate like section 3 and at this'upper or outer end of said arm 12 is provided a T-shaped head 14 which forms a finger piece thereon. by the bending of the plate l raised, and in this position the longer arm 12 will fit iush with the outer face of the plate like section 3 of the body. rlhe T- shaped head or finger piece 14h is however slightly bent outwardly so as to be more readily engaged by the' fingers when it is desired to lower the same or dispose the clasp to its ineiective position and to aid this engagementJ by the fingers, the upper edge of said "FT-shaped head is corrugated or otherwise roughened as indicated at 15. rl`he opposite or shorter arm 13 of this L- shaped clasp 10 is, as stated above, adapted to project through the enlarged opening 7 in the opposite face or plate like portion 2 of the body and this portion 13 has the side edges thereof notched as indicated at 16 whereby a portion of the garment or other material to which this is applied may be received therein in the application of the clasp to its effective position. `When the lever or clasp 10 is disposed to its ineffective position, that is when the arm portion 12 thereof is lowered with respect to the plate like section 3 the opposite arm section 13 will be raised and the material may be inserted through the open end of the body 1. Upon the disposition of the clasp to its opposite position, that is upon the raising of the arm section 12 of said clasp or lever, the op posite arm 13 thereof will be forced against the material, thus forcing a portion thereof through the triangular shaped opening 7 of the opposite face or plate like section 2 of the body. lt is obvious'that portions of the material will be received in the notches 16 of said arm 13 and inasmuch as this open ing 7 tapers smaller toward its lower end the garment or material will be clasped tightly therein and the clasp or lever proper indicated as 10, will be retained in its effective engaging position. 1n order to release the clasp from its engagement with the garment or other goods to which saine is applied it is only necessary to engagethe head or linger piece 14 on the upper or outer end of the arm 12 and draw outwardly and downwardly thereon. This operation releases the engagement of the clasp proper from the material and said clasp may be entirely disengaged from the garment or material.

lt will be seen from the above description Y of the construction and operation of the device that the clasp is one which is particularly well adapted for use in connection with Suspenders in the application of the same to garments without the use of buttons. It will furthermore be seen that the same is equally well adapted for use in other connections wherein clasps are necessary and Copies of this patent may be obtained for in any use thereof, it will be appreciated that the same may be applied and removed quickly and readily.

1t will still further be seen that the device is one which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.

`While l have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be sorted to, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

-Having thus described my invention what l claim is:

1. A fastener of the class described coniprising a U-shaped body, one arm of which is provided with an opening tapering toward its free end, and an angular clasp pivoted on the other arm thereof, one member of said clasp being positioned for projection through said tapered opening and having curved notches in the side edges thereof whereby, when said clasp is closed, the notched member thereof will be forced 4hrough said tapered opening in the arni of the body and downward into locking engagement with the converging walls of said opening, the outer ends of said curved notches serving to retain a material disposed between-the arms of the body in engagement with said clasp.

2. A fastener of the class described comprising a U-shaped body, one arm of which is provided with a slot and the other with a triangular shaped opening having the apex thereof extending toward the free end of said arm, and an angular clasp fulcruined adjacent the junction of its members on the arm of said body having the slot therein to permit the members of the clasp to project respectively into the slot and through the triangular opening of the arms of the body, the member of said clasp projecting through the triangular opening in one arm of the body having inwardly curved notches on the side edges thereof and adapted to be forced into bindingengagement with the tapered walls of said triangular opening and secure material disposed between said body arms.
