Be it known that I, BURTON MANens, a citizen of the United States, residing at lmler, in the county of Bedford,l State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention is directed to improvements in mail boxes, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that it can be easily and quickly attached to the outside of a door for receiving the mail.

A further object of the invention is to provide a mail boX so constructed that the same can be opened only by a person on the inside of the door.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a mail boX of this type which consists of afew parts so that the same can be manufactured at a very small cost.

With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the casing, said casing having its sides 2 provided at their rear edges with inwardly directed flanges 3 and 4 respectively, the latter having their lower ends terminating in hooks 5, the purpose of which will appear later. The sides are also provided at their rear edges with vertically spaced ears 6 which are for the purpose of securing the casing to the door 7.

lThe flanges 3 are connected by a cross bar 8, said bar having a pin 9 carried thereby. A pintle 10 is supported by the upper ends of the flanges 3 and pivotally connected to said pintle is a cover 11 which serves to normally close the slot'12 formed in the top of the casing so as to exclude rain and sleet.

Slidably engaged in the casing 1 is a bottom 18, said bottom having a back 14 carried thereby which has its upper end tapered as at 15, said tapered part having a perforation 16 formed therein which is adapted to engage the pin 9 so as to hold the bottom in its operative position.

The back 14 has riveted thereto a strip 17, the ends of which project through the slots 18 formed in said back and serve to engage the hooks to limit the downward sliding movement of the bottom 13. Slide ably mounted in the door 7 is a pin 19, said pin being engaged with the release spring 20 which has its upper end secured to the door. The spring 2O serves to hold the pin 19 in its inoperative position.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the perforation 16 is engaged with the pin 9 that the bottom 13 will be held in its operative position. When it is desired toremove the mail from the box the pin 19 is forced outwardly thereby disengaging the perforation 16 from the pin 9, whereupon the bottom will slide downwardly until the ends of the strip 17 engage the hooks 5. Thus it will be seen that the mail can be readily removed from the bottom, and that the bottom can be again moved upwardly so that the pin 9 will snap into engagement with the perforation 16.

What is claimed is 1. In a mail boX, the combination with a door, of a casing, means for securing the casing to the door, a bottom slidably engaged in the casing, a back carried by the bottom, a pin associated with the casing, means carried by the back for engaging the pin to hold the bottom in its operative position, and means carried by the door for engaging the back to disengage the same from thepin, as and for the purpose set forth.
