Aiiomey' UNITED PATENT Patented September 22, 1903.
ClGAR-BOX-LID SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,563, dated September 22, 1903.
Application filed April 24,1902.
T wZZ whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, ARCHIE GILBERT SHADE a citizen of the United States, residing at Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Lid Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to adjustable box-lid holders, and is especially intended for use with cigar-boxes, although not confined thereto, the object being to provide a box-lid holder which shall be simple in construction and inexpensive and efficient in use.
The invention consists in the construction, novel combination, and arrangementof the parts hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device, showing it attached to a box. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device detached. Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are detail views of parts detached.
Letters of reference designate corresponding parts in the drawings.
A designates a principal bar, of any suitable material, but preferably of metal, a hole therein, a, and with clips b and lug c. The bar is bent at right angles with the body thereof at e and has a plurality of prongs f and a series of semicircular notches g. The function of the clips 79 is to. aid in holding in place an auxiliary sliding bar 13, bent at right angles with the body thereof at h and having a slot 2' therein, which said slot permits the bar B to slide back and forth on the rivet or pin Z, as may be desired, in order to attach the device to a box. By reference to the drawings it will be readily observed that the longer the slot t the larger the box to which my device can be attached and secured in place.
j designates a lug, and k a plurality of prongs on the sliding bar B, the functions of which hereinafter more fully appear and which are clearly shown by the drawings, to which reference is had.
0 is an eccentric thumb-piece, which is socured to the principal bar A by means of a rivet or pin Z, said rivet or pin, in connection with the eccentric thumb-piece 0, aiding in holding the auxiliary sliding barin place.
D is an arm fulcrumed on a pin 0, secured to said principal bar A. Attached to the arm D, at the outer end thereof, is asupporter N,- which laps over the edge of the lid of the box to which the device is secured.
E is an eccentric thumb-piece movably mounted on said arm 1), as shown at s, and engages with the semicircular notches g and by means of which the said arm I) may be raised or lowered at different angles to the principal bar, as may be found desirable. The function of the arm D is to hold the boxlid in place by means of the supporter N, which is secured thereto, as shown, and by raising or lowering the arm D by the means hereinbefore described the box-lid can be placed at any desirable angle with the box.
Inoperation the principal bar A is placed againstthe end of the box, with the end thereof passing around the corner and engaging with the back of the box. The auxiliary sliding bar is pulled out, so that the end thereof will pass around the other corner of the box. Then by pulling down the eccentric thumbpiece so that the inner edge thereof is brought against the log '0 the prongs f and k are forced into the sides of the box and hold the device in place.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A box-lid holder comprising a principal bar bent at right angles at the outer end thereof, and with a plurality of prongs thereon, a lug on the lower side thereof, clips at one end of the bar, and an auxiliary sliding bar passing therethrough, with a lug at the inner end thereof, and the outer end bent at right angles, and carryinga plurality of prongs, an eccentric thumb-piece secured by a rivet passing through a slot in the auxiliary sliding bar, and a hole in the principal bar, an arm secured to the principal bar, and actuated by an eccentric thumb-piece engaging with semicircular notches in the principal bar, and a supporter secured to said arm.
2. In a box-lid holder, the combination of a principal bar, clips an auxiliary bar sliding within the clips, a series of prongs, a lug, an eccentric thumb-piece, means for securing the eccentric thumb-piece to the principal bar, an arm, an eccentric thumb-piece, means for securing the eccentric thumb-piece to the arm, and a supporter secured to the arm.
a principal bar, clips secured thereto, an anxiliary sliding bar within said clips, an arm, and an eccentric thumb-piece movably mounted thereon, and engaging with a series 0t" notches in the principal bar.
ARCHIE GILBERT SHADE.
