Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1915;
Application filed February 10, 1914. Serial No. 817,910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, J OHN A. LEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of righam city, in the county of Boxelder and State of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Clip-Board Shield, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
An object of my invention is to provide a transparent shield and covering adapted for attachment to a clip board, that-is to say, to a base provided with a clip. By a clip board, it is to be understood, is meant any equivalent base having means to hold paper to be written upon.
The invention is particularly applicable to a clip board for holding a conductors train book, or a yard oheckers train sheet, or the like, while checking trains in the rain, snow, or wind, whereby the book or sheets will be protected from the Weather, and at the same time will be in full view and may be conveniently the device.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shield for the indicated purpose adapted to be either permanently or removably attached to the clip board.
he invention also has for its object to provide a means for lifting the spring clip from the exterior of the device.
The invention resides in the novel features characterizing the device and will be more particularly explained in the specific de scription following.
eference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved transparent shield showing the same applied to a clip-board; and Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section of the shield and clip board.
In carrying out my invention any suitable board or base 10 is utilized, desirably having a spring clip 11. A own form of clip illustrated is pivoted b ears 12 to the bottom member 14 by a hinge pin 13. The clip is shown also with a known form of stops 15, for properly positioning the train sheets 16, or a conductors train book or the like. The spring of the clip is indicated by the numeral 17.
written upon by the user of My improved shield is in the form of a hood 18, of flexible material, preferably mica or flexible celluloid, the said hood archbottom are secured to the side edges of the board 10. for securing the said side edges, in the instance shown, consist of pins or nails 21.
In order to operate the clip 11 from the exterior of the shield and clip board, and raise the clip when desired against the tension of its spring 17, a device connected with the said clip and extending to the outside is provided. As here shown, eyes 22, 23, on the clip and bottom member 14 ber 14, the free ends, in practice, being given a suflicient length to be taken hold of by the user. Thus a pull on the strap 24 or equivalent element will serve to raise the spring clip. The strap 24 extends, it will be seen, between the bottom of the head or closure 19 and the upper end of the clip board 10.
lVith the described device the clip board may be conveniently used out doors in in clement weather and will afiord an unobstructed View of the book or sheet 16, while fully protecting the latter and permitting the ready entrance and removal of the users hand beneath the shield.
It will be noticed that the clip member is located adjacent the closed end of the shield leaving a free and unobstructed entrance for necessary. Furthermore by locating the clip member at this point it is shielded from the elements and protected against accidents and rust.
Having thus described my invention, 1 its closed end, and a pull device connected claim as new, and desire to-secure by Letters with the clip and extending downwardly at atent: the outside of thehood. The combination with a clip board and its Intestimony whereof I have signed my 5 clip, of a transparent shield having transname'to this specification in the presence of 15 arent sides and top, the sides being secured two subscribing Witnesses. to the clip board at their lower edges, a JOHN ALBERT LEE. transparent closure for the head end of the Witnesses: a board, the opposite end being open, said clip FLOYD L. 06s, 10 secured to its board Within the hoodadjacent CARL A. PARSONS.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, WashingtonJLG.
