TEMPORARY BINDER. APPLIOATION FILED APR. 5, 1906. RENEWED 1'33. 23,1907.
JOHN WEISBROD, OF NEW YORK, N Y.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. May 14, 1907'.
Application filed April 6, 1906. Renewed February 23, 1907. Serial No. 358,977.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WEISBROD, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention pertains to temporary binders for newspapers, magazines, catalogues and so forth, and has for its object to provide for a simple binder that will allow a rapid temporary binding.
The invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a cover showing my binder attached thereto in operation; Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan of the binding device; Fig. 4 a view from the locking point of the binder; Fig. 5a view from the opposite side thereof; Fig. 6 a side elevation of the binder in open position and Fig. 7 a modification of the locking part of the binder.
My binder consists of a wooden rod or bar a to which at one end a metal piece b is secured serving for a pivotal attachment of a flexible strip a of metal or other suitable material. The strip 0 which is of the same length as the bar a is adapted to extend with its flat surface perpendicularly to the upper surface of the bar and longitudinally thereof. At the end opposite to the pivotal joint of the strip the latter has a flat nose d suitably attached to it, which has about the same width as the bar a. This nose d is adapted to engage a narrow space 6 formed between the adjacent end of the bar a and a U shaped piece f of metal which is fitted in the embossed sides of the bar so as .to embrace the free end of the latter. In the front wall of the U shaped piecef a threaded hole is provided to receive a set screw 9 by means of which the metal strip 0 engaging with its nose d the space 6 can be locked in its position.
It denotes a cover of paste-board or the like to the backi of which the bar a which has about the same length as the cover, is pasted or otherwise secured, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The upper surface of the bar a can .be
covered with canvas or leather 7' so as to expose only at one end the space 6 and at the opposite end the fulcrum of the strip (1.
The binding is accomplished by turning the metal strip 0 down onto the unfolded papers, book or catalogue 7c placed upon the cover it, so that the strip will rest between two leaves at the inside edge of the latter and bringing its nose (1 into engagement with the space e in which position it is locked by the set screw g.
Instead of the U shaped piecef of the looking part of the binder the arrangement shown in Fig. 7 can be used. Here a metal piece Z is used the outer portion of which is bent at a right angle upward formin a wall m. The upper part of the wall m is formed to aguide n for the nose d which is adapted to engage into the space between the wall m and the wooden bar a to which the metal piece I is attached.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a temporary binder, the combination with a cover, of a bar adapted to be attached to the inside of the back thereof, a strip extending longitudinally of the bar and fulcrumed at one end thereto, a U shaped piece embracing the opposite end of the bar, a nose attached to the free end of the strip and adapted to engage into the free space formed between the U shaped piece and the bar and means for temporarily locking the strip in,
closed position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a temporary binder, the combination with a cover, of a bar adapted to be attached to the inside of the back thereof, a strip extending longitudinally of the bar and fulcrurned at one end thereto, a U shaped piece embracing the opposite end of the bar, a nose attached to the free end of the strip and adapted to engage into the free space formed between the U shaped piece and the bar and a set screw working in the said U shaped piece, said set screw allowing the temporary locking of the strip in closed position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN WEISBROD.
