No. 737,556. I PATENTED AUG. 25, 1903. W. PELDMANN.
BOOKBINDER.
urmoumm IILBD MAR. 4. 190a N0 MODEL.

UNITED STATES Patented August 25, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
BOOKBINDEIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 737,556, dated August 25, 1903.
Application filed March 4,1903. $erial No. 146,197. (No model- To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FELDMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookbinders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to a means for attaching the binder-cover to the back of the stub and in detachably securing the pamphlet or bound book to the face of the stub by a blade passing through the pamphlet and engaging a device affixed to the ends of the stub.
The device is illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the stub attached to the binder-cover. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, showing the end device and strip underneath. Figs. 3 and 4 are views in perspective of the end devices. Fig. 5 is a side view of the retaining-blade. Fig. 6 is a detail showing reinforcing-strip attached to back of stub and cover.
Similarlettersindicate similar partsthroughout the several views.
The end pieces A and B, Figs. 3 and 4, are composed of thin metallic strips, on one end of which is an upwardly-projecting lug a. The opposite end 6 is bent upward at a right angle over the end, and above the face of the stub c' the free end is turned downward in the shape of an inverted U and terminating in two fingers b in one of the end pieces and in a thumb dand finger c in the other. The stub i is broad and fiat. The lugs to of the two end pieces A and B are inserted in the back of the stub and firmly secured, one at each end of the stub. A flat metal strip m has the longitudinal edges turned or rolled slightly toward each other and is secured to the back of the stub as follows: The flat surface of the strip mis laid along the back of the stub i and the binder-cover and strip are then tacked securely to the stub 2 through perforations made in the strip. The rolled edges of the strip project sufiiciently to be flush with the heads of the tacks or small screws which pass through the cover-back and strip on into the stub t' to make a neat and substantial finish.
A blade D, having a projecting lug or hook 0 at each end, is first inserted into the end piece A between the fingers Z). The pamphlet or book is placed with its back against the face of the stub '5 and opened flat. The blade D is then brought down on the open book, and the opposite end is readily pressed down and, passing the short thumb, slipped into the space between the thumb d and finger c.
The stub may be of any light material, preferably wood, usually as wide as the back of the book to be inserted in the binder, and provides a firm and solid back, yet durable and elastic.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. In a binder, a flexible binder-cover, a metallic strip having the longitudinal edges rolled slightly toward each other, a stub for the back of said binder and means for securing said metal strip and binder-cover to the back of said stub substantially as specified.
2. In a binder in combination a flat stub, an end piece for each end of said stub secured to the back of the stub and bent upward over the end of the stub at a right angle, the free end turned over and downward in the form of an inverted letter U and terminating in two fingers in one of said end pieces and a finger and thumb in the other, a flexible binder-cover, a metal strip having its longitudinal edges turned inward toward each other, said strip and back of cover firmly secured to the back of the stub, substantially as specified.
3. In a binder in combination, a flexible binder-cover, a fiat stub for the back of said cover, an end piece for each end of said stub, a blade having a hook at each end to engage said end pieces, a metal strip having its longitudinal edges turned inward toward each other, said strip and back of cover firmly secured to the back of said stub substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM FELDMANN.
