TEMPORARY BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1905.

Be it known that I, ALFRED U. HAFIJLY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the spring-back form of temporary binders. Heretofore to manipulate, or, in other words, open, these binders it has been necessary either to employ both hands or one hand and a fixed piece or support upon which the binder was laid; and the object of my invention is the construction of a binder that can be supported and operated by and while held in one hand, so as to leave the other hand free to arrange the papers or sheets to be engaged and held by the binder.
My improved temporary binder comprises a flexible back, parallel side gripping members, and covers flexibly connected thereto, made preferably as one, and a clip device, the plate members of which are secured to the parallel side gripping members and are made with [inger-pieces, a spring intervening to engage the plate members and normally maintain the same in an adjacent parallel relation in which they are adapted to grip and hold the papers or sheets of any desired character.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a broken elevation of the preferred form of my temporary binder, and Fig. 2 is a cross or transverse section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections of modified forms of my invention, and Fig. is an elevation in small size of the form of binder shown in Fig. 4. In Figs. 2, 3, and 4: the parts are shown in larger size.
The termaorary binder comprises the flexible back 1/, notched to a greater or less extent for a portion or the whole of the clip device. 5/) are the parallel side gripping members, and c c the covers flexibly connected thereto. These parts are preferably made as onethat is to say, the binders board of the covers and of the parallel side grippingmembers is covered with a cloth which extends between the covers and the side gripping members, forming the flexible hinge portion and at the same time the flexible back. These parts may be of any proportions or of any material that may be desired or convenient.
The clip device comprises the plate members (i e, of approximately the width of the parallel side gripping members 5 b and of any suitable length desired, and said plate members are preferably in one with the finger-pieces (Z c,
which are bent outward, so as to diverge from one another and are preferably perforated, so as to connect with a nail or hook to hang up the temporary binder or file. The finger-pieces ('l e are narrow in proportion to the length of the plate members (Z (a, but of liberal area to be engaged by the lingers. There is preferably an offset at the point of union of the plate members and finger-pieces, and the free edges of the plate members at opposite sides of the finger-pieces are bent toward one another at an angle, as shown in the section, the opposite edges of the curved springs fbearing upon the shoulders formed by the offset portions of the plate members and the angular free edges fitting into one another with one bearing against the other with force, so as to produce the proper leverage against the springs when the clip device is actuated by the finger-pieces to open the same and the flexible back for the insertion of papers or sheets.
In Figs. 1 and 2., showing the preferred form of my invention, the plate members ([0 lie upon the outer surfaces of the parallel side gripping members I 7) and are riveted or otherwise secured thereto, and in these figures the flexible back 1/ is cut away of a length that agrees with the full length of the plate members (I 0. In Fig. 3 I have shown the plate members as lying against the inner surfaces of the parallel side gripping members 7) 7) and riveted thereto, the flexible back being cut away of a length agreeing with the length of the clip device, while in Fig. at I have shown the plate members as riveted to strips it it, and these in turn glued or otherwise secured to the inner surfaces of the parallel side gripping members, the flexible back (z being notched of a width to simply receive the finger-pieces d a, as shown in Fig. 5.
In the several forms of my invention the structures are analogous and the operation the same, it being possible to engage the finger-pieces d e in one hand and by pressing the same together to open the flexible back and throw over the flexibly-connected covers, so as with the other hand to remove the pape'rs or sheets from between the said gripping members 7) 7) and insert others or rearrange those in the binder.
WVhile I have shown and described the temporary binder as composed of the flexible back a, parallel side gripping members 66, and covers 0 a, flexibly connected thereto, I do not limit myself to such parts, as the flexible back a may be dispensed with, the other ITO , offset therefrom, and springs connecting the plate members and holding the side members with force toward one another.
2. A temporary binder comprising a centrally-notched flexible back, side gripping members and covers flexibly connected thereto and a clip device in said notch having plate members secured to the side gripping members and having finger-piece prolongations and a spring connecting the plate members and holding the side members with force toward one another.
3. A temporary binder, comprising a centrally-notched flexible back, side gripping members and covers flexibly connected thereto, and a clip device in said notch having plate members secured to and upon the outer surfaces of the said gripping members and having finger-piece prolongations oflset therefrom and springs connecting the plate members and holding the side members with force toward one another.
4:. A temporary binder comprising side gripping members and covers flexibly connected thereto and a clip'olevice having plate members secured to and upon the outer surfaces of the side gripping members and having finger-piece prolongations offset therefrom, and springs connecting the plate members and holding the side members with force toward one another.
