ERNST A. PAUL WOLF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BINDER AND LETTER-FILE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1907.
Application filed March 2, 1907. Serial No. 360,193.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST A. PAUL WOLF, citizen of the United'States, and resident of New York, in the county-of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders and Letter-Files, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to binders for papers pamphlets and similar articles and is intended to afford a ready and economical means for holding and inclosing papers and pamphlets as will be more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings where like reference characters are used to designate the same parts in the different figures.
Figure 1 is a face view of the interior of my binder showing the parts separated. Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing the ends of the binder pins turned down and occupying a position they would have if binding papers. Fig. 3 is an edge view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an edge view of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view.
In the bindin of papers and pamphlets as above describe boards 6 are employedas the backs of the binder and to these boards are secured flaps or wings 7 on each side of the flexible union stri 8. These flaps may be pasted on the bac s and neatly finished with a covering of paper or fabric and one flap has secured to it the binding pins 9 which are looped about the flap as at 10 and clamped thereon. These pins are intended to pass through the papers to be bound and said papers are pressed down against the flap after they have been strung on the pins. On the other side of the union piece 8 the flap at that point has clamped to it a metal strip 11 which in cross section is shown in Fig. 5 and where it will be seen a depression or channel 12 is formed in its upper face when it is pressed upon the flap 7 said strip also forming flanges for the flap 7 at the sides of the channel. This strip has two perforations 13 formed in it for the rece tion of the pins 9 and when the papers are led on the said pins and the metal strip is then forced down upon the pins and as far as it Will go on the papers when the pins are bent over into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4 and into the depression or channel 12.
In order to secure the pins in this position and hold the papers tight slides 14 are provided which play along the strip 11 and as sist in forcing down the pin and then holding it in the position shown when the binding is completed. This locking of the pin and binding of the papers is effectually performed and when it is necessary to unlock the pins in order to bind additional papers the slides 14 are readily shoved towards the outer ends of the strip 11 when the ends of the pins are free to be bent upward to receive the papers.
It is obvious that I do not confine myself to the exact construction of the parts of the device as shown but may vary the shape or size position or number of the pins or the locking slides without departing from the essential features herein described.-
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.- A file or binder of the class described comprising a back, flaps attached thereto, pins attached to one of such flaps, a plate disposed longitudinally of the outer flap forming a channel, with side flanges for said flap and rovided with openings for the reception of the pin, and slides embracing and slidable on the flanges of suchstrip and adapted to move over the ends of the pins,
bend them down and secure them.
2. A binder or file of the class described comprising a backing having a pair of flaps, pins attached to one of the flaps, the other flap being provided with a longitudinal channel and side flanges for such channel, slides movable on the last mentioned flaps over the channel thereof, engaging the flanges 'at the sides of such channel and adapted to be forced over the ends of the pins to bend them down and hold them.
Signed at New York in the .county of New York and State of New York this sixth day of February A. D. 1907. i
ERNST A. PAUL WOLF.
