BUCHAN I STICKER FOR FILING PRINTS IN BINDER'S Filed April 20. 1929 FDLD EIN LINE HERE INSERT EFRINT TD FULD E' I5 Hugh 6.3 uchan Patented July 2 8, 1931 1' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 'iHlIGI'I G. BUCHAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSI'G-NOR TO BUCHAN TELE- PHONEREOORDS (10., F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF J DELAWARE A.
Application filed April 20,
The present invention pertains to a device: for facilitating the filing of blue prints or the like in a binder and more particularly to a novel sticker for embracing the blue print at the fold and capable of. permitting the blue print to open fiat without crackpoint Where it is glued to the in the binder capable of permitting the blue print to be opened flat Without the necessity of removing it from the binder. Then, too, this sticker is of such a construction that it will strengthen the'blue print at the fold and will prevent the blue print from cracking at the point where it is glued to the sticker.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate one embodiment thereof, and 1n which:
Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of my novel sticker showing it applied to the folded edge of a print;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the sticker shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is: a fragmentary perspective View illustrating how the blue print may be opened flat Without disturbing the sticker;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary View illustrating how the sticker may be folded parallel to the flat print to permit of the print'being laid flat on a table or the like, and
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the sticker prior to its application to the print and showing the glue on the flaps thereof.
In the drawings:
The reference character 10 denotes gen-' erally a foldedsheet of paper which may stamped'on the flap 15 adjacent the 13 may be provided with a STICKER rcnrimnc rninrs IN nmnnns 1829. Serial N0. 356,689.
comprise a blue print or the like to be filed in a binder. The fold in the print is designated by the reference character 11. This I fold is adapted to be embraced by a sticker of my invention designated generally by the reference character 12. I
The sticker 12 includes a folded sheet of relatively flexible paper 13, the sides of which folded strip are secured to a filler 14 by means of an adhesive such as glue. The free ends of the sides of the folded strip 13 comprise spaced flaps 15 which extend laterally from the sticker proper. Each flap 15 as shown in Figure 5 is provided on its inner surface with a strip of glue or other adhesive 16 which strip may be a half inch Wide.
In use the sticker is applied to the blue print to the folded edge 11 of the blue print in such a manner that the edge 11 of blue print 10 extends to the line 18 shown in Figure 2. This line is stamped on one side of oneof the flaps 15. The indicia Fold on line here insert blueprint to fold may be line 18. This means that the flap 15 is folded outwardly on the line 18.
Obviously, the strips of glue '16 are initially moistened before the blue print 10 is inserted thereb'etween. Moreover, after the folded edge 11 of the blue print 10 is placed between the flaps 15 and properly aligned therewith, the flaps 15 are pressed into firm contact with the adjacent sides of the blue print to cause the adhesive to secure the flaps to the print. f
Also, if it is so desired, the folded strip plurality of perforations 20 extending clear through the filler l l. These perforations may be utilized to receive the clamping rings or rods of the binder. Of course, itis to be understood that the stickers may be mounted in a binder which does not utilize clamping rings or the like without deviating from the features of the invention.
When the blue print and sticker are mounted in a hinder, the blue print may be referred to and folded out flat without the necessity of removing it from the binder! coming cracked at the fold 11 as is commonly the case in the usual binder. That is to say, the flaps 15 will resist the tendency of the sides of the blue print being drawn apart or in other words tie the sides together at the bend 11. Also should it become necessary to remove the blue print and sticker fromthe binder, the blue print vmaybe folded out flat on a table with the strip 13 .of the sticker disposed substantially parallel to the'flat print as shown in Figure 4. This means that the sticker will not interfere with the flattening of the print on a table. Then, too, if it is so desired the sticker 12 may be provided with suitable indicia indicating the file location of the print in the binder. In other words, thesticker may also be utilized as an index tab.
'Now, I desire itunderstood that although I have illustrated and described in. detail the preferred form of my mvention, the invention is' not to be thus limited,vbut only in so far as defined by the scope and spirit of the appended claims. I
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a folded sheet of and means secured to the folded sides of the sheet near the folded edge thereof whereby the sheet may be filed in a binder and opened out flat whilein the binder, of flexible paper,
sitioned adjacent the fold of thestrip, the said folded strip being secured to the said filler to form a relatively stiff portion of the strip adjacent the fold and leaving upstanding fiexible flaps above 'thefiller, the said flaps being secured to the folded sheet so that the folded edge of the sheet moves outwardly between them and the flaps are diverged laterally as the sheet'is unfolded.
2. As an article of manufacture, a device v for mounting a folded sheet of paper, such as a blue print, in a binder, the said device comprising a folded strip of flexible paper, a relatively deep filler'member between the folded sides of the strip and positioned adjacent'the fold of the strip, the said folded strip being secured to the said filler to form a relatively stiff portion of the strip adjacentthe fold and leaving upstanding.
flexible flaps abovethe filler, the said flaps 7 having fastening means on their-longitudi-- nal margins whereby the said flaps may be the said means including a folded strip a relatively deep filler be tween the folded sides of the strip and pofolded edge so that the folded edge of the sheet is reoiprocable between the folded sides of the strip when the folded edge of the strip is held against "movement in a binder.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed: my name at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
