-CHECK BOOK.
Appiication sied october 8, 192e. serial No. 140,325.
l It is a desideratum to have books open out flat. This is particularly advantageous in books to be written in, such as check books and account books generally for posting and ruling.
This invention provides a check or other commercial book leaves bound together in ainaiiner to insure its opening out flat at any point, thereby facilitating the making of entries and insuring vthe book remaining open until closed by a Vpositive movement of the user.
In accordance with the present invention, .the leaves forming the book arehplaced together in a pile, the pile of leaves is then manipulated in any determinate way to expose a very small portion of each leaf at one end of the pile, an adhesive, such as glue, is now )applied to the exposed ends of the leaves and the pile is restored to normal position, thus causing the glued edges of the leaves to become adhesively boundand before the glue sets, the binding strip is applied to the glued fedges of the sheets in the usual way, portions of the binding strip projecting and being attached to the stubs or flaps of the fly leaves preliminary to applying the back and cover.
While the drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is' to be understood that in adapting the means to in eet specific needs and requirements, the design maybe varied and such other changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof reference is to be had to the following description and the drawf ings hereto attached, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a check book embodying the invention, the saine being opened out fiat and a portion being broken away to show more clearly the binding.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional viewk on the line 2 2 of Figure 1, showing the parts on a larger scale.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of a pile of leaves after being manipulated to expose a small portion of the leaves at one end. Y
Figure 4- is a detail perspective view after the leaves have been readj usted and the binding strip applied thereto.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of a embodying individualA and will not close until the part'sare brought portion of the book showing the binding completed. c
Qorrespondingland like parts are referred to in the `following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral l designates the leaves of the book, each leaf being separate and distinct from the others. In accordance with the invention the leaves l are arranged to form a pile which is subsequently manipulated in any preferred way, by machine or otherwise, to expose a small portion of each sheet at one end of the pile, as shown ni'ost clearly in Figure 3. A suitable adhesive, such. as glue, is applied to the exposed end portions of the leaves, after which the pile is ie-forined to bring the glued edges of the leaves into aline-' nient. It will thus be understood. that the leaves are boundtogether at `one end by a small strip or portion of adhesive. The usual cloth binding' strip 2 is now applied to the ends of the leaves, said strip projecting to be applied to the studs or flaps 8 of the ily leaves 4f. The cover 5 isl now applied in the usualway andthe binding is completed.
A book bound in accordance with the invention may be opened out flat at any point together at the will of the user. By having the book opened out fiat, entriesmay be conopposite edge portions of v veniently made and in the case of account V flexing the stack to expose a narrow portion 9 of each leaf, applying adhesive to the exposed portions of the leaves and allowing the leaves to return to their original stacked for-v mation to effect adhesionv of contacting faces ofthe leaves adjoining one edge of the stack, applying a binding strip against the said edge of the stack with the intermediate portion of the strip adhering to the stack and side portions projecting therefrom, attaching flyleaves to the projecting side portions of the binding strip with portions projecting therefrom, and applying a cover to the binding strip and projecting portions of the ily leaves.
2. A book comprising a stackof separate leaves having flat contacting face to face endescribed the invention, what y iioA gagement With each other, adhesive between contacting 'faces of said leaves and extending continuouslv from the upper to t-he lower .edge of the stack adjoining a Side edge there-V of, a binding strip adhering to the said side edge of the Stack and having side portlons projecting therefrom, Hy leaves adhering to the projecting side portions of said binding Y v strip and projecting from the sides thereof, and a Cover adhering to the binding Strip and 10 'projecting portions of the fly leaves.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
