LOUIS WESSEL, JR., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'IO AMERICAN LOOSE LEAF MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A. CORPORATION OFILLINOIS.
ORDER-BOOK AND COMBINATION PAGE AND ENVELOP THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. ll ll 191% Application filed September 10, 1915. Serial No. 49,970.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS WESSEL, J r., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Order- Books and Combination Pages and Envelope Therefor; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form apart ofthis specification.
This invention relates to an improved type of order book wherein the pages thereof upon which the original of the order is written are detachable and foldable into envelop form and provided with sealing means to seal the same, andthe reverse surface of the page on which the order is written is so printed that the envelop formed by folding the page is self-addressed to the firm to which the order is to be sent. The order book also provides in combination with detachable order sheets or pages, copy pages placed there-- between upon which .a carbon of the order is traced, the front surface of the carbon sheet adapted to receive a copy of the order and the reverse surface of the carbon sheet printed for use as a memorandum, so that when the book is opened to an original order sheet at the right hand side, the left hand side being the reverse surface of a carbon, may receive written thereon memorandum to assist a person in filling out an order on the order sheet opposite.
It is an object therefore of this inventlon to construct an order book employing theme of a number of pages, alternate pages of which are detachable and provided with a gummed tab which, when the page is folded, serves as a flap to afford an envelop whereby the folded page may be sent through the mail in envelop form without requiring an additional inclosure or envelop therefor.
It is also an object of this invention to provide an order book embracing detachable original order sheets and fixed copy sheets arranged in alternate relation, the reverse surface of the order sheets printed to serve as an address for the order sheet when folded into envelop form after detachment from the book.
It is furthermore an important object of of order book wherein detachable order sheets are associated in alternate relation with copy sheets, the front surface of each order sheet adapted to receive an order written thereon and facing the reverse surface of a preceding copy sheet when the book is opened, the latter being printed to receive memoranda thereon regarding orders to be made, and the reverse surface of saidorder sheet being printed to afford a self-addressed envelop when the order sheet is detached and folded and sealed with the gummed tab formed thereon provided for the purpose.
It is finally an object of this invention to provide an improved type of order book wherein detachable sheets therein may be folded to form envelops for mailing, and the copy sheets in the order book'may serve on their reverse surfaces as memoranda sheets tion.
Fig. 2is an edge view thereof.
- Flg. 3 is a view of the book in openposi tion.
Fig. .4 is a plan view of one of the order sheet pages detached from the book.
Fig. 5 is a View of the same during the process of folding into envelop form.
Fig. 6 is a view showing the same completely folded ready to besealed with the flap shown in sealed position in dotted lines.
Fig. 7 'is a front view of the self-addressed completely folded and sealed order sheet in envelop form.
Fig. is a central section taken through the folded order sheet or envelop.
As shown in'the drawings:
The book comprises covers, each denoted by fthe reference numeral 1, and bound therewithin are a number of pages consisting of order sheets 2, preferably white in color and having perforations 3, along which said sheets may be detached, and copy sheets 5, preferably yellow in color, one copy sheet being ,interposed between each of said order sheets. As clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the order sheet outer edge or margin and its front surface is printed as an order blank to receive orders written thereon, whereas the reverse surface has an address printed thereon, which, when the order sheet is folded, appears as shown in Fig. 7.. The front surface of each of the copy sheets 5 is blank to receive a carbon copy of the order written in the original on the order sheet, whereas the rear surface of said copysheet, as shown in Fig. 3, is printed to receive on what is designated as a want list, memoranda for future orders to be made. In order to fold the order blank 2, into envelop form, it is first detached along the line of perforation 3, and the top and bottom margins are then folded inwardly, as shown in Fig. 5, after which the lower portion opposite the tab 4, is folded upwardly, as shown in Fig. 6, and the tab 4, is then sealed thereover, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6. The opposite side of the envelop so formed in Fig. 6, is shown in Fig. 7, with the address correctly positioned for mailing.
The operation is thought to be obvious from the description. However, it is readily apparent that by this invention an order book is provided which may be given out free of charge by a concern desiring to receive the orders, to customers who, upon entering an order upon an original order sheet '2, detach the same and fold the sheet into envelop form, and of course the record of the order is retained upon the copy sheet 5, remaining in the order book. Of course any advertising matter whatsoever may be printed on the reverse side of the order sheet 2, a sufficient space, however, being left clear aroundthe address or that portion of the sheet forming the front side of the envelop, as shown in Fig. 7.
I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
An order book, comprising alternately fixed and detachable sheets, a gummed tab on each of said detachable sheets projecting beyond the fixed sheets and adapted to seal said detachable sheets when folded into envelop form, said tab at each end terminating short of the length of the sheet to provide a rectangular portion at each end of said sheet adapted to be folded, and said fixed sheets being formed blank upon one side to receive a carbon copy of the matter written upon the superposed detachable sheet and upon their other sides being adapted to receive memoranda as to further orders.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
