I van,
APPLICATION FILED APR.4, 1913.
Patented Feb. 10, 191 i INVENTOR John 09/70 6734)? JOHN ANDERSON, OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY.
COMBINATION WRITING-PAPER AND ENVELOP TABLET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1914.
Application filed April 4, 1913. Serial No. 758,806.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, at present connected with the United States Navy on board the U. S. S. Utah, have invented a new and Improved Combination VVriting- Paper and Envelop Tablet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to tablets, and particularly to a tablet in which sheets of writing paper,'and a series of envelop blanks are so combined that the paper and the envelop blanks have a compact and convenient arrangement, with the envelop blanks spread out in flat form and superposed one on another, the paper and the envelop blanks being held to stubs defined by lines of perforations or their equivalent, so that the letter sheets and envelop blanks can be readily detached as required for use.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination tablet embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of one of the envelop blanks and a portion of its stub.
In forming a tablet in accordance with my invention, a series of letter sheets 10 is arranged, spread out in flat form, and approximately a corresponding number of em velop blanks 11, the blanks being superposed one on another. The series of sheets 10 of writing paper and the series of envelop blanks are preferably separated by a central stiffener or baseboard 12, and the tablet is completed by covers 13, 14, and a binding strip 15, preferably of linen or the like, the side portions 15" of which constitute hinges on which the covers may be swung.
The inner side of that cover 14 that overlies the sheets 10 of writing paper has blotting material 16 on the inner face thereof, so that the cover may be brought down upon the written matter, to blot the same.
The sheets 10 are formed with stubs 10*, and the envelop blanks are similarly formed with stubs 11", defined respectively by a series ofperforations 10", 11", so that a sheet of paper or an envelop may be readily detached from its respective stub.
It is to be observed in connection with Figs. 1 and 2, that the writing paper is spread out in fiat, unfolded form, its foldmg line being indicated by scoring as at 10, and also it 'will be seen that the envelop blanks are unfolded being bound into the pad in flat open form, the body panels 11, 11, and the sealin flap 11 being in line with each other and lnline also with a securing flap 11 that unites a blank to its stub 11. The envelop blanks are gummed on one side of the sealing flap 11 and on one face of the end flaps 11 of the adjacent body panel 11, the gummed surfaces being toward the central separating stiffener or base 12.
In practice, a letter having been written upon the. outermost sheet 10 of paper, the latter can be readily detached at the line of perforations 10" and folded on the central line 10. In the case of the envelop blanks the outermost one may be addressed, the address being produced on the outer face of the panel 11; thereupon the envelop blank may be detached at the line of perforations 11".
The envelop, it will be seen, is still unfolded or in the from of a blank. v The securing tab 11' is folded down against the panel 11, on the inner side; the end flaps 11 of the panel l1 are then folded inward onto the panel 11, over the securing tab 11; the blank is then folded on the score line 11 between the panels 11 and 11, so that the anel 11 overlies the panel 11, with the en tabs 11 therebetween; the gummed end flaps 11 are then folded onto the back of the envelop over the outer side of the panel 11; finally the written sheet having been placed within the envelop, the sealing flap 11 is brought down upon the back of the envelop and over the gummed end flaps 11 and sealed.
It is to be noted particularly, that by arranging the envelop elements in the form of superimposed blanks having the proper elements gummed and facing inward, and uniting the several blanks in tablet form par- 'elleling the sheets of paper, and by having the sheets of paper spread out in fiat unfolded form, the pad wlll be in a very compact form for, a given number of sheets of paper and the proper complement of envelops. Moreover, by the arrangement of the envelops in spread-cu blanks, as (le scribed, they form a properly fiat base sufficiently broad to prevent any tendency of the tablet to rock on any articular portion of the envelops; it will e observed that the letter sheets and the envelop blanks for their major portions have approximately the same width, and therefore when writing is being done on the letter sheets and the en- ,velop blanks are at the bottom, a substantial support is afforded for the letter-sheets for the greater portions of their area.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a tablet, a series of superimposed envelop blanks each in spread-out form, portions of the envelop blanks having gummed edges facing inwardly, each blank being formed with a securing flap and a stub, there being a weakened line between the said flap and stub.
2. A pad composed of sheets of writing paper and separate envelop blanks, the writing paper being spread out in the form of superimposed flat sheets disposed at-one side blanks furthermore including flaps at eac side, the width of the portions havin the side flaps being equal in width to the s eets of writin paper, to form a substantialsupport for t e writing paper for the full width thereof, when the. said paper is being written upon. I In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. JOHN ANDERSON. Witnesses: i
