HORACE P. BROWN, OF ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA.
MANIFOLDING SALES-BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
Application filed July 12,1907. Serial No. 333,418.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE P. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Sales-Books,
secured to the block snug over the block when the cover is secured to the block; and in which book the block will not interfere with the quick and easy engagement of the free ends of the sales-slips by the fingers in turning the leaves.
It has been found that a square block or one which is rectangular in cross-section, is disadvantageous for these reasons: First, it is impossible to attach the cover to the block in a neat manner and do the work economically; where the cover is wrapped around the square block, the cover almost invariably bulges on one side of the block when the staples are driven in. Second, with a square block fitting snug against the end of the pad of leaves, it is difiicult to get the fingers in between the pad and block in order to take hold of a leaf and turn it.
I have discovered by making the block substantially of triangular shape in cross-section or beveling off its top side towards the pad of leaves, and then securing the cover to the block by bringing an end of the cover around the two right angle sides of the block and down over the incline, .that when the staples are driven through the cover and block, the portions of the cover on the top and bottom of the block are drawn in such fashion that the cover is stretched taut over the vertical back edge of the block. This greatly improves the appearance and saleableness of the book, and also gives a smooth, plain surface on which the name of the salesman can be written.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved book. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view.
A represents a pad of leaves or saless lips suitably secured at one end to a flexible cover 2 and about midway of the length of the cover strip. This cover has a back portion to protect the underneath portion of the pad and extends beyond the loose end of the leaves and carries the block 3 which constitutes the main feature of the present invention. The other end of the cover is designed as a loose flap a to fold over the top of the slips and protect them. When the flap portion a is closed down on the pad, the end of the flap will be substantially flush with the end of the pad and with the inner edge of the block so as not to interfere with the quick and easy engagement of the free end of the leaves by the fingers without lifting the flap.
The block 3 extends across the end of the pad and cover, and is secured to the latter. The block is preferably triangular in cross-section with a vertical back edge and with its top 4 inclined downwardly and inwardly towards the lowermost leaf of the pad A. The end of the cover which passes beneath the back of the pad is wrapped around the block from beneath, up over the straight back edge of the block and laid over the inclined top surface 4. The staples 5 are then driven through the cover and into the block to secure the block to the cover. The act of driving the staples drawsthe portions of the cover on the top and bottom of the block in such fashion that the part of the cover which is stretched over the vertical back edge of the block lies flat and smooth. At the same time that the block is secured to the cover, one or more carbon sheets 6 are secured at one end underneath the block.
If desired a backing board 7 may be inserted between the pad and back of the cover to give a stiff support to the back of the book.
By having the block diminish in thickness from its rear top edge to its front edge adjacent to the pad of leaves in the manner herein shown and described, the ends of any of the leaves of the pad may be easily engaged by the fingers, even with the book lying fiat on the counter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 1. A salesbook comprising a pad secured at one end to a cover having a back-portion and a foldable front-flap, the back-portion of said cover provided with a block which extends across the free end of the pad, said block being substantially triangular in crosssection, and the end of the cover being secured to the block by folding the cover over the block and driving staples through the cover and pad so that a portion of the cover is drawn over the inclined top of the block.
2. A salesbook comprising a cover having a back-portion and a foldable flap-portion, a pad secured to the hackportion of said cover, and a triangular block secured to the back-portion of the cover and extending across the free ends of the pad.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
