Be it known that we, JOSEPH M. TOEPFER and CHARLES H. DEPPING,'citi.zens of the United States, residing at Holyoke, in'the county of I-lampden, State of Massachusetts,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Temporary Binders, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists of an improved construction of a temporary binder that is adapted-to contain and hold a number of separate leaves to serve as a note-book.
Our invention further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinaf ter fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a temporary binder embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan'view of the upper portion thereof with the top cover and clamping-plate open. Fig. 3'represen'ts a front elevation of the upper portion thereof with the top cover and clamping-plate closed. Fig. 4 represents a-section taken on line at {I}, Fig. 2, with the top cover and clamping-plate closed. Fig. 5 represents a section taken on line a: m, Fig. 2, with the top cover beneath the back Fig. 6 represents a fragmentary detailed perspective vlew.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring'to the drawings, A designates the back cover of the binder, and B the front cover thereof, the same being joined by the hinge O, which permits thefront cover to be turned beneath the back cover, as shown in Fig. 5, so that when using the note-book as a writing-pad said front cover is out of the way. The back cover A is longer than the front, cover B to extend above the same at thetop of the binder, whereby the clamping-plate D, that is supported by the brackets E, can close upon the upper portion of the leaves F, the free edge of said clamping-plate D being situated above the upper edge of the top cover B. The said brackets E have onelimb extending along the back of'the back cover A, to which they are secured by screws G and nuts H. The said nuts 'H project upwardly from the front face of the back cover A and serve as pins to pass through the perforations in .the leaves of the note-book to hold said leaves in place. The saidbrackets, it will be seen, project .beyond the upper ends of the back cover A and are provided with angular limbs that rise abovethe cover A and which are provided with-heads J, convenientlyelliptical in shape. The clamping-plate D is hinged to the said heads J of the brackets E conveniently by means of the sockets K upon the plate that receive the pintles L upons'aid heads J. Between the hinged sockets K of said plate D are spring-fingers M, that engage the face of the headsJ' to hold the same in the desired position. The said clampingplate D is also provided with depressions or sockets N, that receive the upper ends of the pins-H, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The operation is asfollows: It will be noted that the springs M in bearing against the face of the head J hold the clamping-plate D either open or closed. When in the closed position, said clamping-plate D effectually prevents the leaves-from being removed from the pins, although this can be readily accomplished by swinging the'clamping-plate open. forated leaves can be readily placed upon or removed from the pins when the clampingplate is open, and when the clamping-plate and the top cover are closed a compact notebook is formed. In use the top cover B is turned until it lies against the rear face of the back cover A, so as to be out of the way, as will be obvious. l
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, .i's
1. A temporary binder consisting of a back cover provided with means for receiving a plurality of leaves, a hinged spring-actuated clamping-plate at the top of said back cover adapted to bear upon said means for receiving the leaves, and a front cover hinged to the side of said back cover, said front cover being shorter than said back cover, whereby The pertoo - 5 ing situated below the lower edge of said at one end of said back cover adapted to ehvided with heads, and aclam ping-platel inged gage said means for receiving the leaves, and to said heads and provided with springs ena front cover-hinged to the side of said back gaging the same, said clamping-plate adapted cover, the upper edge 'of said front cover beto engage said pins.
