EGIVIONT B. ARNOLD, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
PUBLICATION-BINDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EGMONT B. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Publica' tl0l1-BlIlClFS and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact de scription thereof.
My invention consists in what is hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification, its object being to provide simple, economical, strong, durable, convenient and eflicient binders especially designed for periodical publications, particularly single publications such as telephone directories.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents an end elevation of a publication binder in accordance with my invention partly in transverse section on the plane indicated by line 1 1 in the second figure of the series; Fig. 2, a plan view of the binder open and partly in section, and Fig. 3, a side elevation of a fragment of said binder partly in section.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 4 indicates each of the sides and 5 the flexible back of the binder-cover, this cover being of ordinary construction common in the art. Pasted to the back and sides of the cover is a sufficiently wide strip (3 of buckram or other suitable preferably pliable textile fabric folded to form parallel longitudinal pockets 6 for the reception of bows 7 7 that result from suitable bending of flat metal strips. The bow 7 is inserted at one end of the pockets 6 and the bow 7 is inserted at the opposite end of said. pockets, said bows being lapped one upon the other in working position and preferably fastened by any suitable means in the aforesaid pockets that are thereby stiffened. The bend in each bow is centrally provided with an elongated angular eye or slot transversely thereof through which to extend a thin fiat strip 8, one end of the strip being preferably bent to form a right-angle stop and the other end provided with an aperture for a hanger-ring 9 or other suitable keeper. The space between the pockets 6, 6 and corresponding extent of bend of the bows 7, 7 is immate- Specification of Letters Patent.

rial as is also the number of slots in each bow-bend and the number of strips 8, these being matters that depend upon the demands of the trade.
The publication to be bound is set in between the pockets 6, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, the strip 8, positioned as herein shown, being then engaged with said publication as well with the bends of the bows 7, 7, and the hanger-ring 9 or other keeper is engaged with said strip to prevent retraction of same.
By the employment of the thin, fiat strip 8, as aforesaid, the bound publication has no tendency to bulge when closed, said strip being close fitting between leaves of said publication.
I claim:
1. A. bindenback having parallel pockets of textile fabric thereon longitudinally thereof, bows resulting from bending of flat metal strips engaging the pockets from opposite ends of same and lapped one upon the other to stiffen said pockets, a removable stri extending through slots in the bowbenc s, and means for maintaining the strip in its engagement with said bow-bends.
2. A binder-back having parallel pockets thereon longitudinally thereof, bows resulting from bending of flat metal strips engaging the pockets from opposite ends and having exposed elongated angular eyes in the bends, a thin flat metal strip extending through said eyes, and means for maintaining the strip in engagement with said bows.
3. A binder back, a single strip folded to form a plurality of parallel pockets longitudinally of the back to which it is secured, bows engaging the pockets from opposite ends of the same, a removable strip extending through slots in the bow-bends, and means for maintaining this latter strip in engagement with said bow-bends.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of 'Wiscousin in the presence of two witnesses.
EGMONT B. ARNOLD.
Witnesses:
