Description

J. G. SMITH. Temporary Binder.
Patented Feb. 4, 1879-.
UNITED STATES PATENT O EIoE JEROME G. SMITH, OF HUMBOLDT, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARY BINDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,06 1, dated February 4, 1879; application filed November 20, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROMIE G. SMITH, of Humboldt, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter and Bill Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view of my improved letter-file open. Fig.2 shows the same closed, and Fig. 3 is a cross section taken through one of the bails.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to binders or covers for filing away letters, bills, invoices, and the like; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, A represents a cover, like an ordinary book-cover, consisting of the back B and sides (I D. The side 0 is provided with slots E E, for the bails F F, which are secured on the outside to the back of the cover by means of rivets or other suitable fastening device. The inner ends of the bails are bent outward at right'angles, as shown at G, and provided with slots H, fitting over the studs 1, which are pivoted upon the inside of side D, near the back of the cover. By turning said studs the bails are fastened securely in position, as represented in Fig. 1.
J J are strips of sheet metal, having slots K K, by which they may be adjusted upon the bails F, as shown. The strips J are provided with sharp lateral projections or points L, which may be turned inward over the body of the strip, so as to form sharp hooks M.
Any desired number of strips J may be strung upon the bails F, each being designed to receive, say, from twentyfive to fifty letter or note sheets.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood. The letters, bills, 850., which it is desired to preserve can be easily adjusted upon the strips J. When one is full the hooks maybe slightly compressed, so as to keepthe sheets securely in position. When a number of sheets are to be filed at one time it may be found convenient to adjust them upon one of the strips before bending the points thereof, thus perhaps saving time.
Again, the separate strips in one cover may be used for letters, bills, and other matter, thus making one cover or binder answer the purpose of several, and being not only cheaper, but more convenient for ready reference.
When the strips are full they may be filed away with the letters, or the latter may be detached and the strips used over again, at the desire and convenience of the owner.
The cover or binder, it will be seen, can be used for an indefinite length of time, and its simplicity and the facility with which it may be used will recommend it to merchants, correspondents, and others.
It is obvious that my improved binder may be manufactured of any suitable material or materials, and in various sizes; nor do I confine myself to any precise construction of details; but,
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a letter-file or temporary binder, the strips J J, having slots K, for attachment to the binder, and provided with sharp points L, by which hooks M may be formed,'substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
2. As an improvement in temporarybiuders, the cover A, having bails F, arranged substantially as described-that is to say, with one detachable end-in combination with the strips J J, strung upon said bails, and provided with points L, by which hooks M may be formed, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JEROME 6.. SMITH.
