Description

G. B. HUNTINGTON. Book-Binding;
No; 205,095. l Patented Jun e18, 1878.
WITNESES %%VINVENTQR -MJ/W ATT-ORN EY .UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE B. HUNTINGTON, OF THERESA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF IONE HALF HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES H. HOUGHTON, OF METUOHEN, NEW
JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-BINDINGS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 205,095, dated June 18, 1878 application filed April 20, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. HUNTING- TON, of Theresa, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Book-Binding; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of a book with the binding-plate applied, and Fig. 2 is a transverse' section of the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in metallic backs for books and periodicals; and the nature of the invention consists in a metallic back-plate bent into U form to receive the edge or back of the book, and having its edges doubled under, which plate is then pressed on and the book further fastened in it by indentations, as will be In the annexed drai'vings, the lette1;A designates a book, and Bthermetallic back-plate, designed to hold the same together in bound form. This back is formedbybendii'ga strip of metal int-o U shape, then? doubling` itsl edgesV under, as shown at a. The backV of the book is then passed into the plate and secured. thereto by pressure.
In order to secure the leaves of the book more rmly in the back-plate, indented spurs b are made from the outside in the metal of said plate, in rear of the edge of each foldedunder portion, as shown in the drawings.
The rounded edge a of the back-plate affords a smooth surface to be presented to theleaves of the periodical or cover of a book, which causes little or no wear, and is incapable of wounding the n gers.
When it is deemed necessary, a hole may be punched through the back-plate, and a ring, d, inserted therein for convenience in hanging up.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the leaves A, of the back-plate B, having its longitudinal edges a doubled under, pressed on the edges of the leaves, and secured rmly thereto by the indented points b, made in rear of the foldedunder edges, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE B. HUNTINGTON.
Witnesses GEO. KELsEY, S. G. LANDON.
