JOHN C. CLARKE, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
. Letters PatentiNo. 71,703, dated .December 3,V '1867.
" IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARY BINDERS FOR MUSIC, 6to- TO ALL WHOM 1T MAY CONCERN:
"3e it known that I, JOHN C. CLARKE, of Jersey City, Hudson county, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Yortfolio for Newspapers, Periodicals, Music, Ste.; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whchwill enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in
which- Figure 1 is a view of my improved portfolio open, and showing in red lines themanner in -which the music, 55e., is attached.
Figure 2 is a cross-section of the same, closed and filled.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved portfolio, so constructed and arranged that the periodicals, tc., may-be easily attached, securely held, and readily removed, when desired; and it consists in the combination of thev rigid metallic .back plate, having cross-slots formed in its end, and thc hinged side plates, by which it is connected with the cover with each other, andpin the combination of the cord'or cords for securing the content-sof the portfolio in place with the slotted back plate; the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A are thesides, and B the flexible back of the portfolio, about the construction of which there is nothing new. C is a rigid metallic back, to the side edges of which are hinged the edges of the side plates D, as shown I in figs. 1 and 2. The side plates D are secured to sidesA of the cover by means of rivets, or in some other convenient and substantial manner. In the ends of the hack plate C are formed cross-slots e', or holes, for the passage of the'cord E, by means of which the periodicals` music, or other contents of the portfolio are secured in place. n
- The .cord E may be continuous, that is to say it may be passed through the slot at one end of the back plate C, then along the said plate, through the slotat its other end, along the other side of thc plate, and so on, until enough turns have been made to hold the intended contents of the portfolio. The cord E may be elastic or inelastic, as maybe preferred, and, if desired, instead of being continuous, each cord may make but a single turn. The music, periodicals, duc., are attached by passing them through a loop of the cord E, so that the said cord may rest in'the central fold ofthe music or periodical, as shown in red in figs.1 and 2. When thus attached, the music or papers are read in the order in which they are placed, in the same' manner as the consecutive-pages of a book are read. i
I claim'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Il..v The combination of the rigid metallic back C, having cross-slots c formed in i`t, and the hinged side plates D with each other, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
. 2.. The combination of the cord or cords-E with the slotted back plate C, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth. Y l
3. The combination of the-slotted back plate C and hinged side plates D with the side boards A and back B of the cover, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth. l The above specification-of my invention 'signed by me, this 18th day of June, 1867.'
