0. LOEWENBAGH. DETAGHABLE GOVER FOR PADS, BOOKS, 6w. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 6, 1910.

mam m OSCAR LOEWENBACH, OF- MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
DETACHABLE COVER FOR PADS, BOOKS, 8250.
Specification of LettersPatent.
Patented July 19, 1910.
Application filed March 5, 1910. Serial No. 54.7,439.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Oscar: LOEWENBACII, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of h'lilwaukee, and State of \Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Covers for Pads, Books, &c., of which the following is a specification My invention relates to improvements in detachable covers for pads, books, etc.
The object of my invention is to provide a form of cover, which, when applied to a pad, may be opened and closed. with or without the leaves of the pad. without causing the fastciiings to release.
A further object of my invention is to provide. a form. of construction in which the cover may be repeatedly ,used, regard being had for simplicity and cheapness of construction, as well as for durability.
A "further object of my invention is to provide a form o't construction in which pads of various thicknesses may be secured and firmly held in position against one of the covers.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in wlnch- Figure l is a perspective view showing my invention applied to a pad, the latter be ing illustrated as partially removed from the cover, and the fastenings being shown in releasing position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view drawn longitudinally through the pad and its covers and on a line exposing one of the fastening posts. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view drawn through the pad and its covers in front of the posts.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
A and B are the respective covers, the outer surfaces of which are preferably 'l'ormcd of leather.
C is a binding, which is rigidly secured to the cover it but is unattached to the back l) and cover ii. The binding C is formed of a. plurality of layers of any suitable material, such as fabric. or leather, and has em: bedded therein a metallic plate l located lmlween the layers and held in position by said layers and by eyelet l'astenings It. Another mctallic plate ti is mounted upon that portion of the backing C which is secured to the cover A, and is provided. with outwardly projecting posts H, the extremities of said posts being provided with heads I connected with the rest of-the posts by neck portions J. The cover A is preferably provided with an inner covering a, which conceals the metallic plate G and also holds it in position upon the outer portion of the cover A, the binding C being partially in terposed between the parts G and A as above explained.
The eyelets F are formed of spring metal and are adapted to engage the heads I of the posts H and to secure the binding C to the posts by the expansion of the eyelet metal into the neck portions J of the posts. These posts H and eyelets F are not claimed my invention, except in so far as they enter into combination with the other parts of my improved cover.
The binding G is flexible and is of suflicicnt size to lap over the largest book, pad or block K through which the hea of the posts are adapted to project. The binding is um-mmccual. with the cover ll, except by means of the flexible back I) and cover A. The covers A and [3 may be either flexible or inflexible, but the back 1) should have additional flexibility. ll is obvious that when the cover B is swung downwardly it will not pullthe eyelet i astenings F from the posts H, but will leave the pad or book securely bound to the cover A. The eyelet tastenings F, however, are so formed th: t they can be easily detached from the posts by pulling, upon the binding C adjacent to the fastenings.
Where the pad K is of less thickness than the length of the posts ll between the plate t} and the necks J, it is held in position by the spring L. This spring is riveted to .the binding at M, the rivet passing through the metallic plate E. This spring is preferably centrally seciired to the plate I) and bind ing and is provided with end portions which normally extend diagonally inwardly toward the cover A, and are provided with outwardly turned extremities N so that the spring will not mar or injure the surface of any pad or book which may be inserted in i the binding. This spring L preferably has sullicicnt flexibility to permit it to assume a substantially flat position where the pad equals in thickness the full capacity of the posts to receive it.
Having thus described myinvention, what provided with fastenings adapted to engage the freeends of the posts said binding being Otl'lGIWlSG unconnected with the back and unconnected with the other cover.
2. The combination of a pair of eovers,a
flexible back connecting said covers a metallic plate mounted upon the inner face of one 01' said covers near the back, a pair of posts mounted upon said metallic plate, and
' a flexible non-metallic binding permanently secured to said posts and cover at the attached ends of said posts, and provided with fastenings adapted. to detachal'ily engage the other ends of said posts when the binding is in position for use; said binding being otherwise uncoi'mected with either the covers or the back The combination of a pair of covers, a flexible back connecting said covers, a pair of posts mounted upon the inner face of one of the covers near the back, a flexible non-metallic binding also mounted upon said cover and provided with fastenings adapted to resiliently engage the free ends of the posts, and a metallic reinforcing bar mounted in said flexible bindin and connected with said fastenings; said binding being otherwise unconnected with either the covers or the back.
4. The combination of a pair of. covers, a flexible back connecting said covers, est-s mounted upon the inner face of one o the covers, a flexible binding connected with said cover and adapted to resiliently engage the free ends of the posts, and a spring conneeted with said flexible binding and adapted to bear upon the surface of a pad when the latter is mounted upon the posts and the postsupporting cover, with the flexible binding engaging the free ends of the posts.
in testimony whereof I ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR LUEXVENBACH.
