Letters Patent No. 69,062, datuil /S'eptmnwi' 24, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-COVERl IBOTBGTORS.
TO ALL WIIOM I'I MAY CONCER-N:
Be it known that wejCIIARLEs L.l ALuxANm-:u and Vle'roula A. OsuonN, of Washington city, in the county oi' Washington, and District of Columbia, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Beek-.Cover Protectors; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in whieh- Figure 1 is a view of the cover-protector open previous to use.
-Figure 2, a view of the baci: ot` said protector when on a. hook.
The prescrit invention consists in rendering the book-cover protector expansible, which may be put ou and taken ofi' at pleasure, and which will adapt itself to vhooks of various thicknesses and of several sizes. It can be niade oi' linen, India rubber, leather, or other material of sufficient durability, strength, and elasticity.
The cover-protector,(sec iig. 1,) is in two parts, Al and A2, connected 4together by India-rubber or elastic bauds a a u and havinfr a centre niece or ila) C C attached at c e to the )art A or formino' a art and bein a c, a v o g.
an extension of said part. Also the India-rubber or elastic bands Ii I) I I, fastened at the points ffff, hold firmly the upper and lower folded portions of the cover D D, pass through part of the end folds G'G, thus allowing oi an adaptation of the saine cover by new folds to 'books of various sizes. '.lhese Indiarubbcror elastic bands may be attached by sewing or by means of clasps or eyelets. .lhe centre piece orilap C C, whether a part ot' A] or detached, will also accommodate itself` easily, by means of the upper and lower extended folded portions u c, to similar requirements. iut should the part A1 be extended s o'as to replace the centre piece er `ilap C C, then said part may be attached to A2 by an elastic band or ba-nils to a point or points nnderv ncath the folded portion G, in which oase, in adjusting the cover-proteetor to a hook, the folded upper and lower portions D D would have to be eut at the points desired to iit the back.
It is obvious that, in accordance with the plan of the invention, the elastic bands or strapzsidescribed in 'cach of the several situations may be widened so as to'iill the whole space, though this is not regarded either as an economical or desirable mode of constructing the cover'. In order to adjust the back-to correspond in length with the sides, when applied to a larger volume than the origina-l fold is adapted to, au ivory folder or "the back of a large knife may be applied to form the new fold desired.
We are aware that a boek-cover protector, the overlapping,r back edges of which llave been heretofore Vjoined together by paste or mncilage, has already been patented; we do not therefore broadly claim such a device, but we do claim as an improvement in detachable book-cover protectors- 1. The elastic bands or straps o a, tbc., to form an expansible connection for thc two halves of the coverprotector, substantially as described. i
2. The elastic bands or straps b b, tbe., in combination with the flap c c of centre piece C, and the folds D D and G G, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
Such a book-cover protector, or mode of covering bound books, as, by reason of its expansibility and extensibility, may be adjusted tolbooks ot' various sizes, substantially as described.
