UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
`'WILLIAM P. SLOAN, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
BOOKBINDING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,137, dated May 9, 1893.
Application filed July 5, 1892. Serial NoA 438.980. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. SLOAN, or" Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented cert-ain new and usefullmprovernents in Bookbinding and-Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description. l
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in bookbinding and the books produced thereby, whereby a compact and strong book is formed adapted to be fully opened so that its leaves lie perfectly flat for conveniently writing thereon.
The invention consists ot signatures or seotions connected by a binding thread with a cord held on the back of each signature or section, the binding thread also forming a loop on the cord for the passage of the transverse bands.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement showing the book open. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing two sections adapted to be fastened together. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same showing the sections in place. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing several sections nished. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of part of the improvement showing the attachment of the cord and transverse band to the section; and Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same.
The sections or signatures A, of the book are formedin the usual Way by folding a number of sheets of paper across the middle, the several sheets being connected with each other at the crease by a binding thread B, which also serves to fasten a cord C, of flexible material to the back of each section, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 3. The binding thread B also forms one,
two or more loops B, at the back of each section and through each loop passes the transversely-extending band D, made ot' a width corresponding to the height of the loop B.
When a series of sections are to be fastened together, the rst section has its cord C attached to the back by the binding thread B, which latter is then run to thesecond section, so as to bind the several sheets therein in place and also to force its cord C in position on the back of the section, the several sections of the book being treated in a like manner, that is, one is attached tothe other at the cord C with the transverse bands D extending through the several loops B formed by the binding threads, the said loops being in alignment one with the other so that the binding band D extends transversely through the several loops of the several sections.
The endsof the transverse bands D are fastened in the usual manner to the short leaves E, and the several sections are covered up at the cord C by the back F, made of leather or other suitable material and fastened to the short leaves E, which latter and the back are attached in the usual manner to the covers of the book.
It will be seen that a book constructed in this manner permitsits leaves to lie perfectly flat when opened, as each section of the book has an independent book formed by the respective cord C.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent- The combination with the series of sections or signatures each having an external oord C alongits back, a binding thread extending in and out through the back and around the cord C and also having loops B', the transverse strips D extending. through the loops B of the several threads and the backing E F secured to the cords and bands, substantially as set forth.
WILLIAM P. SlLOAN.
