My invention relates to a book-cover removable by means of a clasp and a tongue adjusted to slide in and out of the clasp and this invention consists, in combination with such a clasp, of a tongue provided with afleXible covering for attaching it to the back of a book, so that the book may be opened fully and smoothly, as hereinafter more fully described.

A represents a book, the leaves of which are stitched or glued together in the usual manner.

Bis a T-shaped tongue, formed of pasteboard or other. suitable materials, the proper size to fit neatly in the clasp attached to the cover.

,0 represents a flexible covering of the tongue,

which covering is firmly glued or otherwise securely fastened to the tongue and to the back of the book, as shown in the drawings.

D represents the clasp, constructed of any suitable material, usually of sheet-brass. The edges of the clasp are turned inward, as shown in the drawings, to form smooth edges against the surface of the tongue.

The clasp is fastened to the cover F by meansmof two or more staples, E, (shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings,) which staples are in serted through slots in the clasp, and are clinched between the inner and outer linings of the book-cover.

It is evident that the above-described devices may be used on spring-back books, and on any other books the leaves of which are stitched or glued together in the usual manner, and that a book provided with this remova ble cover may be opened out as freely, fully, and smoothly as a book, bound in the usual manner. i

I am aware that book-covers removable by means of clasps and tongues are not new, and I do not claim, broadly, that principle; but

In a removable book-cover, the combination, with the clasp D, attached to the cover F, of the T-shaped tongue B, secured to a covering of fabric, which is attached to the back of the book, substantially as and for the purposes described.
