WILLIAM J. FOSTER, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGN OB, 'IO CHARLES GREEN, 0F
' BROOKLYN, NEW YOBK;
snrABABLE-LEAF SAMPLE-BOOK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM J. FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable- Leaf Sample-Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sample books in which a plurality of leaves are assembled, and more particularly to the means for detachably securing those leaves to each other, respectively. The object of my improvements is to provide fastening means for the leaves of a sample book of the class specifiedin which the leaves may be readily joined and as readily detached, for the removal of any individual leaf, or for the insertion of another leaf at any desired location relative to the other leaves.
WVith these objects in view my improvements comprise features illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the drawing accompanying this specification -wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sample book provided with my improved fastening means; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of portions of two leaves of a sample book showing said fastening means detached and about to be assembled; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the first step in assembling; Fig. 4 is a similar view showing a further step in assembling; and Fig. 5 illustrates the completion of assembly. Figs. 2 to 5 inclusive are to a uniform scale, larger than that of Fig. 1.
In accordance with my improvements, I provide at one edge of a given sheet, as 2, means extending outwardly therefrom and which means I have illustrated as a tongue or tongues, 3, projecting preferably at right angles from said edge. Also preferably, I form said tongue integral with sheet 2, although it is obvious that, as well known in the art, said tongue may be formed of a separate portion of similar material to said sheet, or of other material if desired, and attached to the sheet by some well-known means, not shown.
Near the edge of a second sheet, 4, I provide holding means adapted to engage the outwardly extending tongue 3 of sheet 2. V
This holding means I have illustrated as a slot, 5, near edge 6 of said second sheet 4, and said slot is preferably parallel with edge Specification of Letters Patent.

Application fild December is; 1916; Serial No. 137,290.
6. For convenience in folding the leaves one upon another after they are hinged together, I preferably form a crease, 9, in sheet 4, near and parallel to edge 6 thereof, and preferably coincident With slot 5. I
For fastening tongue 3 to leaf 2 after the engagement of said tongue with the holding means 5 of sheet 4, I provideslot 7 in said sheet 2. Said slot is preferably parallel with edge 8 of sheet 2, from which said tongue extends, and is located at a distance from said edge 8, approximately the same as the distance of slot 5 from edge 6 of sheet 4. Said slot 7 corresponds in position with and is adapted to receive and hold tongue 3, when said tongue has been passed through slot 5 in leaf 4 and folded around that portion of said leaf lying between slot 5 and edge 6.
In assembling the leaves of my improved sample book, the edge of one leaf, as 2, overlaps the edge of another leaf, as 4, when said leaves are laid out fiat; tongue 3 of the first leaf is then passed through slot 5 in the second leaf and folded around the edge portion thereof; then said tongue 3 is passed into slot 7 of the first leaf, whereby thetwo leaves are securely locked together, (Fig. 5,) when they may be folded along the line of crease 9 of leaf 4.
I claim: I
1. A sample book comprising a plurality of detachable leaves, an edge of one leaf overlapped by an edge of a second leaf, a tongue extending outwardly from the overlapped edge of the first leaf, a slot in the overlapping edge of said second leaf adapted to receive the tongue of said first leaf, and a slot in said first leaf positioned and adapted to receive said tongue after it has peein passed through the slot in said second 2. In a sample book comprising a plurality of leaves, means for detachably con necting the adjoining edges of two leaves including in combination a hinge member at the edge of one leaf coextensive with said edge, formed by folding the edge portion of said leaf onto the body thereof, a slot through said leaf in the line of folding, a tongue extending outwardly from the adj acent edge of the second leaf, said edge being coextensive with the hinge member of said first leaf, said tongue being adapted for insertion through said slot and for folding g 1,247,1oe Y over said hinge member, and a slot in said of New York, this 30th day of October, second leaf, opposite said tongue and adja- 1916, before two subscribing Witnesses.
cent the infolded edge of said first leaf, 7 adapted to receive the folded over end of WILLIAM FOSTER said tongue. Witnesses:
