SEXTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wytheville, county of Wythe and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttonhole-Strips, set forth in the following specification.

Thisinvention relates to button hole tape.

One of the objects thereof is to provide a simple and durable continuous button hole strip or tape which may be readily and, securely attached to, and incorporated in, a garment, as by sewing an edge thereof to the appropriate portion of the garment.

- Another object is to produce a neat appearing multi-ply button hole strip suitable for attachment to a garment by sewing through a single or a plurality of thicknesses of the material formingthe strip.

Other objects will be in part obvious an in part pointed out hereinafter.

The invention accordingly consists of the features of construction and arrangement of parts which-will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claim.

In the accompanying drawings wherein is shown one of the various possible embodiments of the invention,Figures 1 and 2 are respectively plan and sectional views ofa piece of fabric suitable for folding to form the button hole strip; Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views showing the strip in one stage of making; Figs. 5 and 6 are similar views of a short length of completed strip; Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic sectional view of the completed strip showing a button hole and stitching.

Similar reference numbers refer to similar parts throughout the drawings and specification.

A short length of a strip or band of suitable fabric is indicated at 1 and longitudinal lines are shown at 2, 3 and 4:, on which the strip is folded to provide a plurality of plies of material. Fig. 5 shows the strip after its longitudinal edges 5 and 6 have been folded toward one another along fold line 8, so as to bring the fold lines 2 and 4 ap proximately together at one edge of the finished strip, form a finished terminal edge 13, and causing the raw edges 5 and 6 of the material to lie between the outer plies of the strip, as shown in Figs. 5,6 and 7 Patented Mar. 16, 1 915.

p Tg PATENT f 7' When thus folded the strip consists of two' I outer plies 7 and 8 inclosing the inner ply 9, all of the full widthof the finished strip, and a narrow infold 10, turned in at the inner edge of the finished, strip between the edges of theouter plies but extending inwardly a distance short of the button holes 11. g

The button holes and their stitching are indicated at 11 and 12 respectively. They pass through the three plies 7 Sand 9 and the stitching securely holds these thicknesses of the material together and insure the maintenance of the form of the strip under all conditions. It will be obvious that by making the inturned ply .9 of suflicient width to produce the three ply structure of the finished strip, the strength of the latter is greatly enhanced and the button hole stitching is uniform, distinct advantages which are not to be'found in button hole strips of other construction.

In applying thestrip to the garment the 1 same may be attached by'stitching through i the four thicknesses 7, 8, 9 and 10 or, if

preferred, the sewing may be made merely to pass through plies 8 and 10. Also in the event that additional width or uniform thickness of button hole strip be desired, the

ply 10 may be unfoldedvso as to lie in the plane and become an extension of the ply 8,

in which case the stitching bywhich the strip is secured tothe garment may pass 7 exclusively through the said portion 10 or exclusively through the plies 7, 9 and 8.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many. apparently widely different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description 7 or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

What is claimed and what is desired to be secured by United States Letters Patent 1s 1 A button hole strip comprising'a single piece of fabric folded to form three strips integrally connected edge to edge and all having the same proximate width, one of said strips forming .an outer ply, another of said strips being bent back upon said outer ply and forming an inner ply, and another of said strips overlapping said inner ply and forming a second outer ply, said last mentioned strip being further provided With an edge portion bent back upon it and engaging said inner ply so as to form an outer terminal edge said piece of fabric being provided with stitched button holes, the stitching of each button hole extending through all three of said strips only and holding the same together as a three-ply two subscribing Witnesses.
