HENRY IV. LYON AND LOTTIE LILLINGSTON, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT; SAID LILLINGSTON ASSIGNOR TO SAID LYON.
METHOD OF MAKING BUTTON-HOLE STRIPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,413, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filed December 9, 1389. Serial No. 333,098. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY W. LYON and LOTTIE LILLINGSTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Method of Making Button-Hole Strips; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to the method of making button-hole strips, with the end in view to provide an economical and symmetrical strip which may be readily secured to a corset or other garment.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the unfolded blank from which the strip is made; Fig. 2, a plan of the strip made by doubling the blank; Fig. 3,a cross-section of said strip; Fig. ea detail perspective illustrating the manner of binding the edges of the button-holes; Fig. 5, a plan showing the edges of the button-holes bound; Fig. 6, a plan of our completed button-hole strip, and Fig. 7 a cross-section thereof; Fig. 8, a plan of a modified form of blank unfolded after cutting the flaps therein; Fig. 9, a plan of a strip formed from the blank shown at Fig. 8, the edges of the button-holes being bound; Fig. 10, a cross-section of the strip shown at Fig. 9; Fig. 11, a plan of such strip partially bound along the edge; Fig. 12, a cross-section of the strip shown at Fig. 11; Fig. 13, a plan of such strip completed, and Fig. let a crosssection of the strip shown at Fig. 13.
Similar letters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying out our invention we first cut flapsAtransversely within aprevionsly-folded strip-blank B. These flaps extend throughout the length of the strip and are formed at suitable intervals in pairs, whose transverse edges meet to constitute the button holes. The strip being doubled, the flaps are of course two ply, and this will be readily comprehended by reference to Fig. 1,which shows the appearance of the cut blank when unfolded. The fiaps are then caused to distend beyond the strip by folding the latter as shown at Fig. 4, and binders C, the exact length of the flaps, are placed over the latter and stitched thereto, as shown at Figs. 4 and 5. A binder D is then stitched along one edge of the strip, so as to overlap the ends of the binders C, and the button-hole strip thus completed is secured within a corset-waist in any ordinary manner.
Instead of forming the blank as shown at Fig. 1, the strip may be folded first and the flaps then cut in and through the two plies. The gist of our invention is in this respect resting in the idea of the coincident flaps formed in the two plies. If desired, the flaps on one ply of the strip may be out through to the edge thereof, as shown at Fig. 8, so that when the strip is doubled over the other edge may extend laterally, as shown at Figs. 9 and 10, to constitute a binder, which latter may be lapped over the binders C and stitched thereto, as shown at Figs. 11 and 12. The binder D may then be stitched over this lapped eye, as shown at Figs. 13 and 14.
Prior to our invention button-holes have been cut in the strip and bound along their edges; but it is a very difficult matter to put the binders around theseedges, and said binders have to be first out into short sections the width of the edges. By forming the edges of the button-holes into flaps and extending the latter, as shown at Fig. 4., they may be readily bound without bungling, while at the same time the binder may be used in a continuous length, if desired, and afterward cut off even with the ends of the flaps.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The method of making button-hole-strip blanks, consisting in forming adjacent flaps transversely within the strip, extending said flaps beyond the strip, and binding them while thus extended, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
