Description

- GARMENT Filed May 18, 1954 jaw {Z29 INVENTOR. i %ar/e$ f. Oaioaf ATTORNEYS.
Patented May 28, 1935 1 GARMENT ApplicationMay 18, 1934, Serial No. 726,247 I 7 6 Claims. '(c1.z 121 The present invention relating'as indicated'to garments has more particular reference to a novel form of construction for a placket opening as used therein for sleeves, cuffs or the like. I The invention also relates to a novel and efficient method for constructing such placket opening.
It is the general object and nature of the in vention to provide a placket opening with a reinforcing facing secured thereon which will not only be simple in construction but may be quickly and economically manufactured. A further object of the invention is to provide a reinforced placket opening which will possess adequate strength and neat appearance. Additional objects and advantages shall become apparent as the following description proceeds.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain structure embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various structural forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing:
Fig. 1 represents the placket opening with the facing piece unattached; Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the facing piece alone; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the manner in which the facing piece is secured to the edges of the placket opening; Figs. 4, 5, 6 and '7 represent progressive steps illustrating the manner of fold which there has been cut a substantially wide inner end placket opening 2 in which the longitudinal sides are substantially parallel. It will be noted that the inner end of the placket opening 3 is of substantially inverted V-shaped form. This is for the reason that in quantity production, a plurality of pieces of fabric pieces I are stacked upon each other and the sides of the placket opening 2 are out by a power driven outter. It has been found that it is much simpler to incline the cutter at an angle of about 45 to cut the V-shaped inner end 3, rather than to out the latter off on a line substantially perpendicular to the sides of the placket opening. A continuous facing piece 4 is folded double and its inwardly folded edges 5 are secured to both sides of the edges ofthe placket opening -2 by. means of suitable stitching 6. The facing piece 4is so folded ata .point adjacent the crotch 3 of the placket opening whereby opposite sides of the facing are adapted to lie upon each other. Reinforcing stitches l are then adapted to secure the facing 4 in folded position and also to serve as a bar or reinforcement to prevent the tearing of the crotch of the placket opening.
The method in which the facing 4 is applied to the placket opening 2 and subsequently folded will now be described in further detail. Referring to Fig. 4, the garment l is first positioned so that the edges of the placket opening lie substantially in a straight line as indicated by the dotted line 8. The facing 4, which is also disposed in a straight line, is then sewed to the garment I. As next illustrated by Fig. 5, the two halves of the facing 4 are folded at right angles to each other and along the line indicated by the reference numeral 9. The resultant position is that as shown in Fig. 4. In the next step, the two halves of the facing 4 are. again folded at right angles to each other and along the line H) whereby they assume a superimposed relation as shown in Fig.6. It is to be noted at this point that there is a portion of the folded facing 4 (as indicated by the reference numeral H) which extends beyond the stitching 6 which secures the facing to the inner end or crotch 3 of the placket opening. The last step of the process consists of stitching the facing 4 as at I in order to secure the folded portions of the facing to each other at a point below the crotch 3 of the placket opening; and also stitching the extending portion l I as at l2 to the garment I. In this manner it will be noted that the crotch of the placket opening is reinforced first by the stitches I, and secondly by the stitches l2 which additionally serve to secure the facing to the garment l and to distribute any force applied to either side of the placket opening, which naturally would become concentrated at its crotch, to a point removed therefrom.
Other forms may be employed embodying the features of my invention instead of the one here explained, change being made in the form of construction, provided the elements stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated elements be employed, whether produced by my preferred method or by others embodying steps equivalent to those stated in the following claims. I
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. In a garment, the combination of a placket opening of substantially rectangular shape, a continuous facing secured to the edges of said placket opening, said facing being folded at a point adjacent the crotch of said placket opening whereby opposite sides of said facing are superimposed on each other, and a portion of said facing, so folded, extending beyond the crotch of said placket opening.
2. In a garment, the combination of a placket opening of substantially rectangular shape, a continuous facing secured to the edges of said placket opening, said facing being folded at a point adjacent the crotch of said placket opening whereby opposite sides of said facing are super-imposed on each other, a portion of said facing, so folded, extending beyond the crotch of said placket opening, and stitches securing said last-named extending portion to the garment.
3, In a garment, the combination of a placket opening and a continuous facing having leg portions secured to the edges of said opening, said facing being doubly folded at a point adjacent the crotch portion of said placket opening, so as to enclose a triangular portion of said facing in between and overlapped by the legs thereof. j c
4. In a garment, the combination of a placket opening and a continuous longitudinally folded facing secured to both sides of the edges of said placket opening, said facing being doubly folded at a point adjacent the crotch portion of said placket opening, so as to enclose a triangular portion of said facing in between and overlapped by the legs thereof.
5. In a garment, the combination of a placket opening and a continuous facing having leg portions secured to the edges of said placket opening, said facing being doubly folded at a point adjacent the crotch portion of said placket opening forming three plies of said facing at said crotch with one leg portion overlying the other and with opposite surfaces of said facing in contact.
6. In a garment, the combination of a placket opening and a continuous facing having leg portions secured to the edges of said opening, a pair of folds formed between the leg portions of said facing and adjacent the crotch portion of said placket opening, said pair of folds defining a triangular shaped layer of said facing such triangular portion lying between and being overlapped by the legs.
