To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FnEnRIoK A. SOHWARZ- Rock, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented "new and useful Improvements in Suitcases, of

which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in the construction of suit cases or the like,and the primary object of the invention is to simplify and improve the existing art by producing an article of this character which shall be simple in construction, strong and In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a case constructed in accordance with the present lnvention. In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the improved case, which, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, is of a substantially rectangular formation and is provided with a hinged closure 2. This facing is preferably constructed of fiber matting, as shown in the drawings, but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to this particular material, as any of numerous other materials may be substituted if desired. The facing 11 is cut substantially rectangular, but is of a lesser size than the board 7 so that a space of perhaps a couple of inches is left between the edges of the facing and the edges of the board; The board 7 at its scores 8 and 9 and beyond the facing 11 is formed with substantially V-shaped cut away portions 12, and the said board is further provided with transversely extending scores arranged at a direct right angle to the scores 8 and 9 and designated by the numerals 13 and 14. These scores 13 and 14 intersect the juncture of the walls provided by the V- shaped cut-away portions. The free edges of both the top and bottom of the device are also cut away as at 15 and 16, the longitudinal edges formed thereby being arranged at a right angle to the scores 8 and 9, while the opposite edges provided by the cut away portions are inclined or beveled toward the inner faces of the said top and bottom. The longitudinal edges of the top and bottom are scored as indicated by the numerals 17 and 18 respectively, and these scores are arranged to intersect the points of meeting of the edges of the board provided by the cut away portions 15 and 16 and are parallel with the scores 8 and 9 as well as with the edges of the top and bottom. The portion of the top and bottom beyond their scores 17 and 18 are adapted to be bent inwardly to receive the inturned or offset edges of the closure 2, as will be hereinafter set forth.

These tapes may be of any suitable material and are of a width sufficient to extend a suitable distance beyond the edges of the board 7. The inner faces of the said bindings are adapted to be adhesively connected to the mucilaginous coating 10 upon the board 7.

When the parts are positioned as above described, the board is placed upon a bending machine and all of the parts are bent upontheir scores so as to provide a substantially cross sectionally U-shaped structure.

The ends 6 have their boards 21 of a size equaling the length of the side 3 and the width of the top and bottom of the body. Theseboards 21 are also coated with a suitable adhesive substance 22, whereby outer facings 23 are secured thereto. These facings 23 are also preferably constructed of fiber amatting, as illustrated in the drawings, but as, stated in connection with the facing 11 other material may be substituted if desired The facing 23 is of a lesser length andvbreadth than the board 21 so as to leave an adhesive surface upon each of the boards between theedges of the facing and the edges of the boards. The boards 21 are each formed with a longitudinal score 24 and the edges of the said boards are cut or inclined inwardly from the said score, as indicated by the numerals 25.

The numeral 37 designates the facing for the closure. This facingmay be constructed of any desired material and is of a rectangular shape but smaller than the board 32 so as to leave a space between the edges of the facing and those of the board when the said facing is adhesively connectedv with the board.

The numerals 38 designate the tapes which are stitched through both the board and the facing a suitable distance beyond the scores of the board. These tapes project a suitable distance beyond the edges of the board and have their inner faces engaged by the niucilaginous substance upon the board. The remainder of the tapes are adapted to be connected with the offset edges and with the top of the closure through the medium of some suitable adhesive substance.

The closure is hingedly connected tothe bottom of the body while the top edge or lap of the said closure is provided with looking elements which co-act with component locking elements carried by the top of the body.

In Fig. 6 I have shown a detail of one of the end members which is mainly constructed substantially similar to that heretofore set forth, but in which a single strip of tape is employed. The end section is provided with the longitudinal scores 39 and transverse scores 40. The portion project ing beyond the scores 40- is formed with V-shaped slits or openings 4.1, the same terminating at the juncture of the scores 39 and 40. The tape 42 is adapted to be bent inwardly when the members are folded upon their scores so as to provide gussets which serve as an additional reinforcement for the bent edges of the device.
