UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
STEWART E. BAKER, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
PAPER BOX OR PAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,977, dated Pebruary l l, 1888. Application filed November 21, 1887. Serial No. 255,775. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEWART E. BAKER, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Binghamton,in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes or Pails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved paper box or pail complete, showing the box or pail closed. Fig. 2 is asimilar view showing the box or pail open. Fig. 3 is a view of the blank forming the box or pail, the folds or creases upon which the blank is folded being indicated by dotted lines; and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the blank partly folded at the stage immediately preceding the finishing of the box or pail.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding'parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to boxes or pails made of paper and folded from one blank into their proper shape; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a box or pail, as hereinafter morefully described and claimed.
The blank used for producing the box or pail is a perfectly square piece of suitably stiff and thick paper, and at the center of this blanka square bottom, A, is formed by creases a, the said square being preferably formed by folding or creasing the blank by means of suitable creasing-dies adapted for that purpose or over the edges of a mold or shaper having the outlines of the finished box. Four keystone-shaped sides, B, are now formed by side creases, I), having their n'arrowersides atthe sides of the square bottom, and thetriangular portions 0 between the side edges of the sides have creases a formed at right angles to their bases. When the triangular corner flaps formed by folding the triangular portions upon their creases are doubled upon the outer or inner sides of the keystone-shaped sides, the box or pail of Fig. 4 is formed.
For the purpose of forming strong places of attachment for the bail D, forming the handle,
opposite sides, are folded upon themselves to form a triple layer, and the bent and doubled or hook-shaped ends d of the bail are inserted through these folded flaps. The triangular flaps F of the two remaining sides are folded the triangular flaps E, which project at two a sewing-machine or by hand, so as to firmly 1 secure the six thicknesses of paper forming the two sides.
It will-now be seen that a square and downwardly-tapering box or pail is formed, having a bail'for carrying it. This box or pail is covered by folding the two free sides of the box or pail over the top so that the inner edges overlap. The two cover portions H carry triangular portions I of the sides, holding the bail with them,so that the bail will appear secured in the tops of two triangular ears, thereby holding the cover portions in place without the aid of any separate looking or clamping mechanism.
The triangular side flaps may be doubled both upon the outside of the box or pail or they may be both doubled upon the inside of the box or pail, according to the character of the contents for which the box or pail is destined, the flaps being folded on the outside when it is desired to have asmooth inner side for holding partlyfluid contents, while when the box or pail is to be used for solid contents, and it is desirable to have a smooth or ornamental exterior, the flaps may be folded upon the inside of the box or pail; or it may be filled to the top without using the cover portions, thus answering the purposes of a larger pail. be folded one upon the outside'and one upon the inside, if it should be so desired.
By having the cover for the box or pail formed by the upper flaps of two sides being It follows that the flaps may also folded down over the top the cover is at all comparatively low cost, and will be very simloo ple of construction and comparatively dura ble, and, being perfectly tight, it may be used for carrying fluids or semi-fluid articles when the material used in its construction is of sufficient strength and durability.
The wire bail or'handle may be substituted by a strip of paper, a piece of string or tape, or any other suitable handle; but the wire bail will be the most desirable, as it serves as a fastener for the triple-folded flaps and as a transverse brace for the pail.
Wire staples, as shown in the drawings, are the most desirable fastening for the triangular flaps of the cover portions; but any other fastening may be employed without departing u from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A paper box or pail consisting ofa square bottom, keystoneshaped sides, doubled triangular corner-flaps doubled over the sides, cover portions at the tops of two sides, formed with the'triangnlar upper flaps folded over upon them and folding over the top of the box or pail, and triangular ears for a handle formed by the three-ply triangular flaps of the two other sides, having their side portions doubled in, all constructed of a creased or folded blank, as shown and set forth.
2. A paper box or pail consisting of asquare bottom, keystone-shaped sides, doubled triangular corner-flaps doubled over the sides, cover portions at the tops of two sides, formed with the triangular upper flaps folded over and se cured by fasteners and folding over the top of the box or pail, triangular ears formed by three-ply triangular flaps at the tops of the two other sides, and a wire bail having its hook-shaped or doubled ends inserted through the said ears, all constructed of a creased or folded blank, as shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto alfixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
