The end walls. and the outer portions of the corner pieces are provided with upwardly extending portions 4 and 5, respectively, which comprise a closure for the pail and are folded inward across the top thereof to close the same. A metal clip is ordinarily secured to the pail and projects above the side wall thereof in a position to be bent inward above the folded closure to retain the latter in closed position. 'Preferablythis clip is secured to the inner fold or portion of one of the corner pieces. The present method of applying. these clips is objectionable for the reasons above given and to overcome these objections aclip 6 of fiat flexible metal, such as tin of a suitable weight. This clip is flat or straight throughout its length as distinguished from the ordinary clip which has its lower end upturned. Further, the clip is secured to one. side only of the inner portion of the corner piece, this being accomplished by means of barbs or struck up portions of the clip. which i are forced through the inner portion of the corner piece and clenched,- thus constituting rivets to secure the clip in position. This construction and mode of application is such that the clip can very readily be secured to the pail by machinery, preferably before closed positions.

The object of the invention is primarily to so construct the pail and so arrange the clip that the latter can be applied wholly by machinery and that the clip will interfere with any of the various steps in the manufacture of the pail; and further to so secure the clip to the pail that it will be held firmly in position. In paper pails of this type as now constructed the metal clip is secure to the inner fold of the corner piece by extending the same through a slot therein and bending the lower portion of the clip up against the opposite side of the corner piece. The upper portion of the clip is projected through a slot in the outer fold ofthe corner piece in order that it may be bent down upon the closure after the latter has been foldedinto its closed position. It is thus necessary to pass the clip through two slots and this must be done by hand, making the operation a slow' and laborious one. Further, the method of fastening the clip to the inner fold of the corner piece is such that it is very apt to loosen and be pressed down out of engagement with the fold. The present construction overcomes these difficulties by securing a flat metal clip against one side only of the. inner fold of the corner piece and providing the upper portion of the outer fold of the corner piece with an opening to per mit this upper portion to be folded over the inner portion and past the clip.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A paper pail having side and end walls, corner pieces connecting the adjacent edges of said walls, each corner piece 'beingfolded upon itself along a diagonal line and also being folded against the adjacent sidewall, the outer portion of each corner piece having an upwardly extending flap adapted to be folded inward in closing said pail, and a clip secured to the inner portion of one of said corner pieces on each side of said pail and extending above the edge of said corner piece on the inner side of the flap of said flaps of the outer portions of pieces to which the clips are secured having openings of a size to permit said flaps to be folded past the respective clips.

2. A paper pail having side and end walls, corner pieces connecting the adjacent edges of said walls, upon itself along a diagonal line and also being folded against the adjacent side wall, the outer portion of each corner piece having an upwardly extending flap adapted to'be folded inward in closing said pail, and a clip secured to the inner portion of one of said corner pieces on eachside of said pail and extending above the edge of said corner piece on' the inner side of the flap of said corner piece, the upwardlyextending flaps of the outer portions of those cornerpieces to which the clips are secured having openings of a size to permit said flaps to be the blank is folded. When the pail is folded the clip thus secured to the inner portion of the corner piece projects above the side wallof the pail but within the flap or up wardly extending part of the outer portlon of the corner piece to which it is secured, it being understood that ordinarily there is but one clip on each side of the pail. To permit the upwardly extending flap to be folded inward when the pail is closed this i flap is provided with an opening 7 arranged in alinenient with that portion of the clip 6 which extends above the side wall of the pail. This opening is of such a size as to permit the passage of the clip when the flap is folded inward. It will be understood that in closing the pail the flaps 5 secured to the corner pieces are first folded inward parts secured to the end walls of the pail are folded inward above the flaps 5. These parts extend across the openings 7 in the flaps 5 and when the clips 6 are bent inward'they will engage these upper portions and hold the closure in its folded position.

The folded pails are ordinarily secured in their folded positions, with the closures in their open positions, by passing the ends of the bails 8 through the folded corner pieces and the respective side walls and performed by machinery. To facilitate the placing of the folded pail upon the form, in the position which it occupies while the bail is being applied, a closure may be provided for the opening 7 which will normally be on the outside of willprevent this clip from coming into contact with any parts of the mechanism when the pail is placed upon the form but which will be forced outward. to permit the clip to pass through the opening when the flap is folded. inward. It will be understood, however, that the use of this closure is optional and that satisfactory re the open ing without a closure. Preferably this closure is provided when the opening 7 is formed, by putting the opening along three sides onl thus leaving a lip or closure 9 which fitssnugly within t1 e opening and at one edge, preferably its upper edge, to the flap. Consequently, after the pail is completed the metal clip will not be visible from the exterior'there'of and will not become visible until the fiap 5' is folded inward, thus forcing the closure or lip 9 outward.
