ALFRED PRIOR AND RICHARD WILLIAM BRICKELL, OF DUNEDN, NEW ZEALAND.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. '7, i913.
Application led April 6, 1912. Serial No. 688,927.
To all whom i may concern Be it known that we, ALFRED Filion and RICHARD WILLIAM BRICKELL, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Dunedin, New Zealand, have invented new and useful improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specilication.
Our invention relates to wood-rimmed light boxes for containing confectionery and the like, and in particular to the hinging and attaching of the lids thereof.
The object of our invention is to enable the lining and frilling of the box to be done before the operation of {itt-ing on the lid, and to provide a lid that folds freely back and has a neat appearance, these advantageous results being attained moreover at less cost in labor than with the construction hitherto usually followed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of a box showing the lid attached according to our invention. Fig. 2 is a detail cross section enlarged, illustrating t-he first step in the hinging of the lid, and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the hinging completed.
Referring` to the accompanying drawings, the box has the usual wooden sides (1) and ends (2) with cardboard or wood bottom and is banded all around with the usual colored paper (t) the edges of which are turned over and in at the top (5) and bottom and at the corners in the usual manner, the bottom being covered if desired by another piece of paper. After this has been done, any frilling or the like can be placed in position around the inside of the box. According to this invention the lid (6) is next prepared for attachment as follows A piece of cardboard of the required size is cut out and along the edge to be hinged a strip of linen (7, 8) or other material suitable for the purpose, is glued, so that half (7) of the said strip is attached to one side of the lid, and the other half (8) projects from the edge of the lid. The lid is then laid in position on the box, as shown in Fig. 2, with the projecting part (8) of the linen strip lying along the top edge of the side (l) of the box, and the linen strip is secured along its center or fold to the top edge of the box as shown preferably by means of a suit-able number of wire staples (9) driven through the strip into the said top edge by a stapling or other suitable machine. These staples are made to pass approximately thro-ugh the center or fold of the linen strip from end to end, adjacent to the edge of the lid to which the strip is glued. Then the stapling is completed the free half (8) of the linen strip is turned up on to the side of the lid opposite that to which the first half (7) is glued, into the position shown in Fig. 3, thus completin the hinge which is formed by the staples passing through the center or fold of the linen strip. The linen strip may first be stapled or otherwise fastened along its center or fold to the top edge of the box, and the edges of the strip afterward glued one on each side of the lid respectively so as to attach the lid: or the method hereinbefore described may be followed, but the important feature of our invention is that the stapling must be on the inside of the strip within the fold thereof. Instead of a continuous strip for the hinge the hinge may be in several portions separated from each other, with staples passing through or over the folds of the separate portions into the wood. The lid covering paper (l0) is pasted on to the lid and turned in along the outer ends, outer corners, and free side thereof, the colored outer surface of the linen strip finishing off the hinged side. rlhe usual inside label (11) is then pasted on.
Having now described our invention what we claim is;
1. in combination a box lid, a strip of pliable material secured to both surfaces of said lid over an edge thereof forming a fold, and a series of staples having their heads within said fold and their legs passing through said strip substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination a box lid, a side of a box, a strip of pliable material secured to both surfaces of said lid over an edge thereof forming a fold, and a series of staples within said fold passing through said strip at said fold and entering the upper edge of said side of said box substantially as described.
3. in combination a box lid, one or more strips of pliable material secured to both surfaces of said lid over an edge thereof forming folds in each strip, and a series of staples with their heads within said folds and their legs passing through said strips substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. 1n combination a box lid, a side of a box, one or more strips of pliable material naines lo this speeieaton in lche ypresence secured to both surfaces of said hd over an or two subscribing Witnesses. edge thereof forming folds in each strip and a series of sta )les With their heads Within ALFRED PRIOR.' said folds andl entering the upper edge of RICHARD WILLIAM BRICKELL said side of said box substantially as de- Nitnessesz scribed. ANDREW J OIE-1N PARK,
In testimony whereof We have signed our JOHN RUTHERFORD PARK.
