UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' THOMAS F. WILLIAMSON OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOOK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,203, dated August 11, 1885.
I Application filed February 2, 1885. (ModeL) To aZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. WILLIAM- soN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Book-Covers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention more particularly relates to the binding of large blank and other books, and has for its object the overcoming of the difficulty which is ordinarily experienced in opening such books out flat, and to proouter sides.
vide for the free and flat opening of them without the usual roll in the backs and strain on the backs and threads used in the stitching of the book.
Usually in opening large blank andother books bound in boards or having stiff backs the first few sheets are drawn back with the cover, causing strain on the threads, and it is to such description of bound books, as distinguished from books having canvas or other like flexible covers, that my invention applies.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a partly-broken inside view of a boardbound book embodying my invention, with one-half of the back or whole cover thrown back or open. Fig. 2is a transverse section of the same with the book open in the middle, and Fig. 3 a further transverse section in part with the several parts in the position represented in Fig. 1.
A indicates the book proper, orleaf portion thereof, stitched and strapped together, as usual, or in any suitable manner; and B B, its board backv or like main cover or covers. Attached to the strapped portion 1) of the book is a stiff or moderately stiff slide or sliding flap, 0, on each of its two opposite or These slides may be made of hard rubber, metal, or any suitable material, and the book generally, including its board or stiff main cover, inside cover or lining, and other parts, also be of any suitable material or materials. Said slides O are fitted to freely work back and forth, when the book is opened and closed, within recesses c in the board backs or covers B, said recesses extending any desired distance into the covers from their inner edges and to within a suitable distance from their end edges, and the slides 0 being proportioned to correspond. This forms a sliding joint at the connection of the book with the covers, whereby the book may be opened freely and flat without straining on the threads or binding, the board or stiff backs by their weight sliding from the book in opening it, thus virtually making the slides stationary and the covers to move on and over them; but, regarding the manner 1n .which the book proper is connected with the cover or covers, it is preferred to speak of the flaps O as slides, which they really and substantially form. Any suitable "stops may be applied to these flaps or slides to limit their movement or the movement of the covers over them, and to prevent the separation of the book and its cover or covers, as Well as to guide the moving or sliding parts. Thus each flap C may have a strip, d, on its face, arranged to work backward and forward within a longitudinal opening, 0, of suitable greater width than the strip and in communication with the recess a at its back. If desired, rivet-like fastenings f may be passed through the covers to keep-them from warp-- ing, and also to prevent any possibility of the slides 0 being torn out, said slides being slotted, as at s, where the rivets go through them. There are various other ways, however, of guiding and controlling the movement of the sliding parts-as, for instance, by constructing the flaps or slides at their ends to fit dovetail grooves in the boards or covers.
Having thus, described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The "combination, with the book A and its strapping b, of the attached flaps or slides O O, the covers B B in sliding connection with said .flaps, and stops for limiting said sliding movement and for permanently connecting the book with its cover or covers, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the book A and its strapping b, of the attached flaps or slides G 0, having face-strips d, and the board or stiff covers B 13, having recesses c and openings e, essentially as and for the purposes here in set forth.
THOMAS F. WILLIAMSON.
