Description

(ModeL) G. HUETHER.
BOOK BINDING.
No. 375,488. Patented Dec. 27, 1887.
INVENTOR: 12% BY Mm m "d ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFrcE.
GEORGE HUETHER, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BCOK BlNDING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 3755MB, dated December 27, 1887.
Application filed January 22, 1886. Serial No. 189.396. (Model) To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE HUETHER, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York. have invented new and useful Improvements in Book-Binding, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to devise such a binding for books that the leaves may be opened out flat at any part of the book without strain upon the back and without strain upon the threads or cords which hold the leaves; and to this end the invention consists, principally, in connecting the spring-back of the binding to the covers by means of flexible connections of considerable width. v
The invention further consists in forming the covers of two parts or thicknesses of pasteboard or other material, the outer thicknesses of each cover being less in width than the inner and connected to the spring-back by flexible connections, the inner thickness of each cover being connected to the inner bindingnext to the back of the leaves.
The invention also consists in the constructron, arrangement, and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawlngs, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an open book bound in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation of the book closed. Fig.3 is a plan view of the same, a portion of the cover being broken away to show the binding.
The leaves A of the book are joined together by the strong threads or cords to, and are secured to the strips B, of parchment or other strong material, by the said threads or cords a, in the ordinary manner, and the said strips B are secured to the inner thicknesses, b b, of the covers F F by adhesive material, in the usual manner-that is, the same as in ordinary binding where covers of single thicknesses are used. A backing, G, of flexible material, is placed at theback of the leaves to cover the said small cords or threads at and the tapes or strips B, and the edges of the backing O are secured to the said inner thicknesses, b b, by adhesive material.v
D represents the spring back; This is formed or provided with flexible side pieces, (1 d, which are attached to the covers F by being secured between the said inner thicknesses, b b, and the outer thicknesses, ff, of the covers. The outer thicknesses, f, of the covers are secured to the outer surfaces of the inner thickness, b, over the side pieces, d, by adhesive material; or they may be bound together by an outer covering of leather or cloth. The outer thicknesses, f f, are of less width than the inner thicknesses, b, and they are placed with their outer edges on the same plane with the inner thickness, so that the edges of f at the back of the book will stand a short distance in front of the edges of the inner thicknesses, I), thus permitting the side pieces, (1, to form a kind of double hinge between the edges of the springback I) and the edges of the outer thicknesses, f, so that the only strain upon the cords a and the leaves A in opening and closing the book is that caused by the inner binding or backing, G, which may be made very light and flexible, the spring-back D taking all the strain and wear to which the book is subjected when closed.
W'hen the book .is open, the flexible side pieces, d, permit the inner edges of the inner thicknesses, b, to lift slightly away from or above the spring-back D, so that the inner binding, 0, will have greater freedom, enabling any and all of the leaves to be opened flat upon both covers without unnecessary strain upon the binding or leaves.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The covers, each composed of two thicknesses, the outcrbeing offset from the back edge of the inner, in combination with the inner backing independent of and separate from the back edges of the inner thicknesses of the covers, and the outer spring-back provided with flexible side pieces connected to the covers between their inner and outer thicknesses, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE HUETHER.
