METALLIC BOOK-COVER.-
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 22, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL S. AN- DREWS and FLOYD TURNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Fredericktown, in the county of Madison and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Book-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to book covers and more particularly to metallic book covers especially adapted to be used on hymn books and books in public libraries, the object being to provide a cover which is preferably formed of aluminum or any other suitable material having an inner face of card board.
Another object of our invention is to provide novel means for pivotally connecting the side pieces to the back piece so that a hinged joint will be formed to allow the book to be readily opened or closed.
A further object of our invention is to provide a cover with crimped edges whereby the edge of the cover will be smooth so that it will not injure a shelf or a piece of furniture when laid thereon.
Another object of the invention is to secure a facing of card board within the side pieces by crlmping the edges whereby they will be held securely in position so that all danger of the card board becoming detached after once being inserted is prevented.
With these various objects in view, our invention consists in the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification :Figure 1 is a plan view of our improved cover in an open position. Fig. 2 1s a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out our invention, we employ a pair of side pieces A and B which are provided with spaced outwardly projecting tongues A and B which are bent back upon themselves to form loops and adapted to aline with loops O formed by tongues of a back piece 0 and through which pintle pins D extend, the ends of which are swaged so as to securely lock the pins in position whereby a hinge joint is formed between the side pieces and back piece which allows the sides to be readily opened or closed. The tongues forming the loops C are secured to the back pieces by pins or rivets and arranged on the back piece is a strip of card board E which is secured thereon by crimping the ends of the back piece. Pieces of card board F and G are arranged on the side pieces A and B and secured thereon by crimping the edges as shown at A B and by the tongues A, the portion adjacent the tongue being roughened as shown at X in Fig. 1 so that the book can be secured thereto by any suitable cement. It will be seen that by this arrangement the pieces of card board are held in their proper positions without the use of cement or any other adhesive material. The face of the sides and back can be engraved or covered with any suitable material desired so as to form a neat appearance.
While I have shown and described a cover having its inner face covered with card board, it is of course understood that the inner face of the cover can be roughened and the book secured directly to the same if desired.
What We claim is 2- 1. A book cover comprising a pair of metal side pieces having loops, of a back piece provided with loops alining with the loops of the side pieces, pintle pins extending through the loops of the back piece and side pieces, pieces of card board arranged on the inner face of said side pieces and back piece, said pieces of card board being secured thereon by crimping the edges of the back piece and side pieces.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a book cover formed of a pair of metal side pieces provided with loops, a back piece provided with loops alining vwith the loops of the side pieces, said loops being formed by tongues which are bent back upon the respective pieces and secured by pins, pintle pins extending through the loops of the side pieces and back piece for securing the pieces together, pieces of card board arranged on the inner faces of said back piece and side pieces, said pieces of card board being secured thereon by crimping the edges of the side pieces having their outer edges bent l0 respective pieces and by the tongues of the back upon themselves forming retaining respective pieces. grooves for holding the inner facing-s.
3. A metallic book cover formed of sheet metal plates said cover comprising a fiat back piece and flat side pieces provided with loops alining with each other, pins extend- Vitnesses: ing through said loops, facings arranged JAMES A. WARD,
upon the inner faces of said side pieces said HORACE D. BENEDICT.
