No. 223,126. Patented Dec, 30, 1879.

NITED STATES PATENT DFFIGE.
CHARLES L. FLUKE, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRITING-TABLETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,126, dated December 30, 1879 application filed August 30, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. FLUKE, of Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in WritingTablets; and I. do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional detail views thereof.
This invention has relation to tablets and blotting-pads combined; and the nature of the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the cover, composed of two leaves united at their upper edges by a flexible back, a. This cover may be bound with any desirable material, as cloth, calf, half-calf, Russia leather, and the like, and may be ornamented in any desired style. To the lower edge of the upper leaf, at its junction with the flexible back, is a hook or hooks, 0, against which is thrust a sheet of blotting-paper, B, that is confined by pressing said book down upon the said sheet, as shown. Atthe opposite end of said leaf is a similar hook or hooks, 0, serving a similar purpose. These hooks are made of short flexible metallic strips, riveted or otl1erwise secured to the leaf, bent reversely into hook form, and overhanging the said leaf 1). The leaf b is provided with marginal U- shaped guides d, formed on each side thereof. Between these guides is snugly received a sheet of pasteboard, O, or other suitable material, to which is secured the tablet D. This is composed of any desired number of sheets of letter or note paper, plain or in the form of bill or letter heads or other advertising matter, glued or otherwise secured to a back, 6, composed usually of a woven fabric, so that as each sheet is removed a clean-edge will be had, that of the paper giving way first.
The tablet is somewhat narrower than the board to which it is secured, so that the edges of the latter project sufficiently beyond those of the former to produce an engagement thereof with the guides aforesaid, thereby preventing lateral displacement of the tablet. The tablet being exhausted, this board may be drawn out and another, bearing a new tablet, substituted therefor, or a new tablet may be secured to the board thus emptied and passed into the guide-grooves aforesaid.
By this means itwill be observed that the covers may be used with any number of tablets, the metallic guides being to all intents and purposes indestructible, and capable of lasting longer than any pasteboard backing.
The blotting-paper may be also removed by raising the retaining-hooks and applying a fresh sheet thereto.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combined blotting-pad and tablet consisting of the flexible backing a, having the covers I) b, the cover I) provided with hooks c 0, adapted to receive the blotting-pad B, and the cover I) having the marginal U-shaped guides 11 on each side thereof, the board 0, having the tablet D, of less width than said board, whereby the said board may be inserted in said guides to connect the tablet to cover b and prevent lateral displacement of the tablet, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CHAS. L. FLUKE. Witnesses:
JAS. G. MERRILL, G. W. HEYWooD.
