FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,260, dated April 6, 1880.
Application filed July 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN ALLEN, of Rockaway Beach, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and'lmproved Fan, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a fan containing a number of leaves or sheets adapted to receive advertisements.
It consists of a fan composed of a middle thick sheet of paper, to give stifiness to the fan, and several thinner sheets joined together and provided with a suitable handle.
In the accompanying drawing a perspective view of my improved fan is shown.
Referring to the drawing, A is the middle sheet, made of a thick or stifi' piece of paper of an oblong form. Next to this, on either side, are placed other sheets, B B, of a thinner paper, of the same size and shape. At the top these sheets are secured together at the middle by an eyelet, a, or other suitable fastening, and at the bottom is placed a forked handle, O, which clasps the fan midway of its width, and is secured by tacks passing through into the leaves. This allows the leaves to be opened from the outer edges like the leaves of a book. On the leaves of the fan thus made advertisements may be printed, and they are easily seen and read by turning up the edges of the leaves.
A fan constructed in this way presents more space for advertisements than others, and serves at the same time as an excellent and economical fan.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A fan formed of loose paper sheets held together at top and bottom by the rivet c and bifurcated handle 0, respectively, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
NORMAN ALLEN.
