Description
R. .RATHBONE. Paper-Files.
No. 141,170. Patentedjuly2 2,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE,
RANSOM RATHBONE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,170, dated July 22, 1873 application filed June 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANSOM RATHBONE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Paper-File, of which the following is a specification:
This file consists of a stick guttered in one or more sides throughout its length, save at one end, which constitutes a handle, and furnished with cords which are permanently secured to the stick at one end, and extend along the gutters to a peculiarly-formed fastening, by which their other ends are secured. The cords are passed over the middle of the papers to be filed from top to bottom, and hold them in the gutters. The fastening whereon the ends of the cords are secured consists simply of two pins around which the cord is first wound, and its end is inserted between them so as to prevent the cord unwinding. Thus is obtained a very cheap, simple, and efficient file for newspapers and other papers requiring to be filed.
1n the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of the improved file, showing a paper in place, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
A is a straight stick, which is slightly wider than it is thick, and is grooved in its edges or narrow sides to form two gutters, g g, which extend throughout its whole length with the exception of a short portion at one of its ends which forms a handle, a, by which the file may conveniently be held. At the end of the gutters adjacent to the handle, cords O O are threaded from opposite sides through a hole, h, extending from one gutter to the other, and
are knotted at the ends to prevent them from passing through the hole. In the outer end of the stick two pins, 1) and c, are secured, and the free ends of the cords (J (J are wound around these, and are drawn between them to prevent them from unwinding, and thereby are very firmly secured. The pin b is bent over to form a hook whereby the file may be hung when not in use.
Papers may be filed on one or both sides of this file, as may be desirable. To file them the cords are passed over the inside of their middle fold, and are then secured by the fastening b c, as just described. Papers filed on this device can be so very securely fastened in the file as to avoid all danger of sagging; and one great advantage possessed by this file is that no matter how many papers are filed on it, the tension on the cord will be the same, for the cord will be drawn sufficiently tight always to retain them within the gutters in the stick. Moreover, this file is adjustable, as the cord can be let out to accommodate different thicknesses of paper.
The file is not only simple and cheap, but papers can be filed on it very expeditiously.
What I claim as my invention is The combination, with the file, consisting of the guttered stick and cords, of the fastening for its cords, consisting of the two pins 12 and 0, arranged in proximity to each other tobind the cord between them after it has been wound round them, essentially as and for the purpose specified.
RANSOM RATHBONE. Witnesses:
EDWIN H. BROWN, MICHAEL RYAN.
