Description
SAM U E L E. HARRISON.
Paper-File Patented April 23', I872.
SAMUEL E. HARRISON, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPRQVEMENT IN PAPER-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,053, dated April 23, 18 72.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. HARRISON, of Jersey City, in the State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Paper-Files; and the following is declared to be a correct description thereof.
This invention relates to an improvement in means for holding newspapers, periodicals,
1 letters, &c., in their proper relative position,
and allowing additions to be made from time to time. I make use of a bar or slat of wood, or other material, rather longer than the back of the periodical to be connected thereto, and at the ends thereof are notches for a thread, that is passed along the fold through the paper near the middle of the back over a hook within the slat, and thence to the notch at the other end of the slat. A11 eye-pointed needle is employed to perforate the paper and convey the thread to the hook, and at the back of the slat is a movable case for holding the thread and the needle when not in use.
In the drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal section of the file complete and in use. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan at the line 00 a2, and Fig. 3 is a view at the back of the slat.
The slat a has notches b b at the ends, and
' an opening or mortise, 0, near the middle, or if there is more than one mortise, 0, they should be nearly equidistant from the ends. The hook d is in a recess at the back of the slat a. The thread is attached at one end at one of the notches or incisions b, there being an eyepointed needle, 0, upon the thread or cord. By the use of the needle 6 the thread is carried through the folded sheet near the middle and hooked upon the hook d; thence it passes along the fold of the sheet and is fastened in one of the incisions I). Upon applying another number of the paper or periodical the beforenamed operations are repeated, and the cord or thread is then attached at b. The supply of thread is, for convenience, kept in the case wound upon the end-hooks i i, which case f also holds the eye-pointed needle 6, and the case is kept in contact with the back of the slat a by elastic bands g g, one at each end.
By this manner of attaching papers or periodicals together and to aholding-file, they will be firmly held in place, but the sheets can be turned freely.
I claim as my invention- 1. The slat a, notched at the ends, and provided with the mortise c and hook d for receiving the thread or cord that holds the paper to the file, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the foregoing, the case f for holding the thread and the eyepointed needle, as specified.
Signed by me this 15th day of January, A. D. 187 2.
SAMUEL E: HARRISON.
