SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,593, dated August 30, 1892.
Application filed .T une 24, 1892. Serial No. 437363. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. SHARE', a citizen of the United States, residin g at Rogers Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Document-Files, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention is intended to provide a file in book form which shall be appropriate for holding letters, bills, and other documents and which shall be so arranged as to permit of easy inspection, and thus enable any particular paper to be found with facility. It is also intended to permit the easy removal or insertion of any paper Without disturbing the others. At the same time the papers are securely held, so that none are likely to drop out accidentally. One purpose for which the file is especially adapted is the holding of freight-tariffs and the supplementary sheets which are constantly being issued to amend them. Any paper contained in the file can be found without loosening the' file, while at the same time the individual sheets are not fastened, and it thus becomes an easy matter to make such changes in the papers filed as are required from time to time. ing the form of a book, is easily stowed and handled.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the file, showing the cover open. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the file, showing the fastening of the several parts.
The principal parts of the file are a folded cover A, the clamps B B', and a flap O, which serves as a connection between the cover A and the clamp B, and, if desired, an index G. The cover A and the flap O may be made of strong and stifif paper and the clamps B B' of thin strips of wood. The flap C consists of two thicknesses of paper, as seen in section, Fig. 2. Between these two thicknesses are inserted the ends of the clamps B B', and the fiaps and clamps are Secured to each other by wire staples D, which may be inserted by means of any of the well-known wire-stitching machines, such as are used for sewing up The file havpamphlets. In like manner the flaps C are attached to the cover A by the staples E at their folds. An elastic band F secures the outer ends of the clamps B B' to each other. VVithin the clamps B B' an index G maybe placed and Secured to the flap C. The same staples E may serve to fasten the flap C to the 'cover A and the index, if both be used. It is not always necessary to use the cover A outside of the clamps when the index is used, as the index then'serves as a'cover to the papers. I therefore include either the index G or the cover A under the term c0ver.
In using the device the papers are inserted between the clamps B B', the latter being opened after the band F is slipped from their ends. If the index G is use'd, the papers are of course placed between the proper'leaves thereof. If it be desired to find any particular paper, it can be done without releasing the clamps B B', the opening of the outer cover A exposing the papers, so that their ends or corners may be turned down until the proper one is reached. Such paper can be withdrawn from the file without releasing the clamps B B', if desired. If a new one is to be inserted, however, the clamps must be opened.
I claim 1. The improved file comprising a folded cover, clamps, as B B', and a flap C, forming a connection by which the clamps B B' are hinged to the cover, and afastenin'g, as F, for the outer ends of said clamps, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a paper-file, of an outer cover A, clamps B B' within said cover, a flap (J, forning an attachment between the clamps B B' and the cover A, an index G, included within said clamps and likewise secured to said flap, and a fastening, as F, for the outer ends of said clamps, substantially as described.
EDWARD A. SHARP.
