IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-FILES.

ATO ALL WHOM I'I MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, SOLOMON Bacon, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of 'New York, have made certain new and useful Improvements iu Letter and Paper-Files; and'I do-hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oi' the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this' specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a full view of my file as used for filing letters in book-like form.

Figure 4 is aperspective view of a bundle of letters filed and secured together, and ready to be stored away.

Figure 5 is a perspective view ot` a modication of my le, as constructed when used for filing newspapers.

Figure 6 represents a modification of my letter-Ele, showing a front view of it, and constructed with metallic springs to operato the paper-flap, and having aspring-catch on it to hold the ilap when in position to insert' the letter.

Figure 10 is a perspective view of a bundle of letters collected and removed from the file, and partly tied to be stored away.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

The nature ot` my invention consists, first, in the employment of needles or idle-hooks, which are straight, combined with a sliding paper-Hap working over the needles, and having the side of the file-back, to which the needles are attached, hinged or otherwise made movable, so asto change the position of the needles so that ready access is had to remove the papers filed in one bundle, whereby the papers filed can be removed in good order, with readiness and dispatch, without mixing or disturbing the same; second,it consists in providing the needles or file-hooks of letter and other files with eyes in the ends of them, like eyes in sewing-needles, whereby the papers filed upon th'e same are at once collected on a thread which has been previously drawn through the eyes, and thereby such papers can be bound book-like, or attached firmly together.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I willprocecd to describe its construction and operation.

A, figs. 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, S, and 9, represents the ile-case as ordinarily constructed in book-like form, but made of sheet metal, with a rounded back, and-with straight sides. The side, B, is loosely attached or hinged to the ends of the case A. C C are slots, in which the paper-Hap D is guided. They may be made in the ends ofthe case, as shown in figs. I, 2, and 3, or in a separate partition, and also in the ends, as shown in figs. '6, 7, 8, `and 9, so that the said paper-dup will freely slide from thc side, B, to its opposite side of the said case. To the side', B, I secure straight needles E E E E, at proper distances apart,and at right angles from the side, B, to the opposite one; and I make the paper-flap with corresponding openings or `holes in it to allow the fiap to pass freely over the needles. F F represent springs, which may ble made oi' rubber, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3, or of metal, as shown in figs. G, 7, S, and 9. They are made and secured in a manner so as to draw the fiap to the side, B, but admit of being pressed back by means of the operator taking hold of the flaps and forcing' it over from the side, B, to the opposite side. In order to allow the insertion of' a letter to be tiled, or of the papers filed to be removed, I either employ a small notch, II, in the ends of the slots C C, as shown in figs. 2 and 5, ora spring-catch, H', shown in figs. 6 and 8, so that by pressing the flaps a little upwards, it will hook fast-in the said notch H, or that by pressing the aps beyond the spring-catch H', the catch will spring in front of the ilaps, as shown in red lines in tig. 8. v

When the file is u'scd, the needles E E arc threaded, the flap is forced to stop, as stated, in the notch H. New the paper to be tiled is inserted between the fiap and the points of the needles. y" The flap is then pressed out of the notch H, or the catch pressed down from the ilap.` 'The ilap being now relieved, the springs F F force it and the paper tiled over `the needles, against the side, B. .After a bundle of papers has beenon the file, and it is desirable to remove thc same for making room for new ones, the operator forces the flap again oil the needles, and while held by the notch H or catch H', the side, B, isturned in horizontal position out oil` the case A, as shown in fig. 9, in Idotted lines. The cord or thread is now partly withdrawn from the papers, so that only a single thread is left in the papers, which is also withdrawn from the needles E, as shown at :z: 9:, in fig. 10, and the ends of the thread are firmly tied` together, as shown at y y, in iig. 10, and-the package of papers can be safely taken from thefile and stored away, being secured together in book-like form, as shown n'fig. 4. Instead of constructing the le of sheet metal, and with the slots C C, it may be made of wood co1nbined with wire guides on its ends, as shown in fig-5, and may be manufactured for filing newspapers at small expense.

From the foregoing it will beseen that files constructed and provided as herein shown, are of little expense and of great utility. .i

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The employment of threaded needles, arranged stationary in. the file, and operating with a paper-Hap., for the purpose of passing a thread in the letters or papers, with the opcrationof filing the saine in the le, so that the letters or papers may thereby he secured when removed from the file, substantially as herein' shown and described. i

2. The combination and arrangement ofthe file-ense or frame A with the side, B, and needles E E, the flap D, and springs F F, and notches H H, operating together substantially as and for the purpose herein shown.
