IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,563, dated July 15, 1873; application filed May 31, L873;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. WINTER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Paper-File, of which the following is a specification: v
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved paper-file, and-Fi g. 2 a vertical transverse section of the same on the line 0 0, Fig. 1, showing method of binding.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improved paper-file for binding letters, bills, newspapers, pamphlets, sheet-music, 860., in a simple, elegant, and quick manner, without tearing, defacing, or otherwise injuring the papers or documents, so that at the same time every paper may be fully and distinctly seen and read in every part. The small cost, and also the convenience in taking papers out, together with the simple manner of binding, recommends it for general use. My invention consists of a square, round, or polygonal piece over which strings are longitudinally stretched in suitable manner, which, in connection with lateral binding-strings placed over a grooved or recessed part of the main piece and a thread and needle, bind the sheets in a manner similar to that of binding books.
-A, according to the size of the papers to be filed, the same is provided with alternating ribs and grooves 0l,cut or stamped in suitable manner into piece A, over which a strong crossstring or binder, O, is stretched laterally and secured to pieceA. The strings B are stretched longitudinally at equal distances on piece A, and secured in suitable manner to both ends of the same. The nearer the strings are placed together the greater the number of papers I Piece A may be connected to a portfolio, F,
provided with a handle, as desired.
The papers are filed in the following manner: The sheet is folded with a narrow edge along its side and then placed under one of the longitudinal strings, B, by lifting it up with needle E. If the sheet is double, one entire half is slipped in, so that it is held without requiring special folding. Any desired number of sheets which can be conveniently pierced by the needle may be placed on one string, B. The needle is then, with its thread D, passed through the paper near its folded edge, close to. and over the longitudinal string B, and then under binder (l, as indicated in Fig. 2, so that the thread D forms a loop around stringB and holds the sheetin place. It may be still further secured by a knot around binder 0. The next string is then broughtinto use in similar manner, and so on.
If desired, the whole or any parts of the sheets filed may be taken out again either by cutting through the string D or by passing the needle back in the same way; or, if only a single leaf has to be taken out, by making an incision into the overlapping part at the point of its connection with string D, so that it may be taken out of string B.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The paper'file consisting of piece A, having longitudinal strings B, and binder-string O and strings D and needle E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
