WILLIAM NIOKERSON, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALBERT SYDNEY HENTHORN, OF SAME PLACE;
COVER AND 3mm,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,553, dated iily 24, 1906. Application filed November 8,1899. serial No. 736,265. on, mddel.)
To 60% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. NIOKERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covers and Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to covers and binders for pieces of music, magazines, and the like, and it has for its general object to provide a simple and inexpensive cover and binder susceptible of ready application to a piece of music or the like and one that is adapted to be readily removed without injury from the piece of music and again used on another piece of music, a magazine, or similar article to be covered.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view illustrating my improved cover and binder in an open position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section showing the cover and binder applied to a piece of music. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the pliable metallic clips of the cover and binder. Fig. aiis an enlarged detail section illustrating the cover and binder applied to a magazine, the several leaves of which are sewed or otherwise connected together.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A is a piece of music, and B is my improved cover.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the cover and binder B comprises a cover proper, a, which is of paper, cardboard, cloth, or other suitable material and is designed to be folded, as shown, to form a bight b, adapted to receive the back of a piece of music or magazine, two or more pliable sheet-metal clips 0, which have their corners bent at an angle to their main portions, as shown, to form barbs d, and stripse of light strong linen or other suitable flexible material, through the medium of which the clipsare connected to the inner side of the cover proper at the bight thereof.
In assembling the parts of the cover and piece of music or the like after the manner.
shown and securely connect the same together and to the cover proper.
In applying the cover and binder to a piece of music or the like the piece of music is placed between the flaps of the cover proper, and the back portion thereof is inserted between the barbed portions of the clips. The said barbed portions of the clips are then pressed inwardly until the barbs engage the several leaves of the piece of music, when the cover and binder will be securely held on the music and the leaves thereof will be securely connected together.
To remove the cover and binder from the piece of music or similar article on which it is placed, it is simply necessary to press the barbed portions of the clips 0 out of engagement with the piece of music, when the same may be readily withdrawn from the cover and binder, and the latter may, if desired, be used on another piece of music.
If desired, the cover proper, the clips 0, and the strips c may be assembled and connected togther in a flat position, so as to take up but a minimum amount of space when stored or packed for shipment. When the parts are assembled in the manner stated, it is simply necessary when it is desired to use a cover to fold the cover proper and bend the clips 0, as shown in Fig. 1.
While the barbs d are calculated to engage the leaves of a piece of music and positively connect the same together and to the cover proper and are also adapted to hold the clips against casual movement between the strips 6 and cover proper, a, I do not desire to be understood as confining myself to the employment of the same, as the pliable metal strips without barbs are adapted when pressed or pinched upon a pieceof music to hold the leaves together within the cover proper.
hen the cover and binder is applied to a magazine or similar publication the several leaves of which are sewed or otherwise connected together, it is'only necessary to press the barbed portions of the clips inwardly until the barbs engage the outside leaves or flaps of the magazine, as shown in Fig. 4.
While the clips effect a secure connection between a piece of music or a magazine and the cover a, they do not interfere with the opening of the magazine or with the same resting in an open position, it being simply necessary when it is desired for the piece of music to remain open to press the same down the middle. I
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that my improved cover and binder is very simple and inexpensive and yet is adapted to afford considerable protectionto a piece of .music or similar article on which it is placed.
It will also be appreciated that by virtue of its being adapted to be readily placed upon and removed from a piece of music, a maga- Izine, or the like the cover is susceptible of repeated use, which is an important advantage.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The herein-described cover and binder for pieces of music, magazines and thelike, comprising the cover proper formed in one piece of flexible material, strips of muslin or other suitable flexible material connected to the inner side of the cover proper at the back and adjacent to the ends thereof, clips, formed of strips of pliable sheet metal, interposed between the flexible strips and the cover proper and secured in position by the former; said clips having angular barbs at their corners extending inwardly through the flexible strips, whereby they are held against displacement and are adapted to penetrate the leaves of the article to be bound and covered,
substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM J. NICKERSON. Witnesses:
