BINDINGrCLAll/IP FOR RECElPT -BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,896, dated September 25, 1888.
Application filed September 20, 1887. Serial No. 250,230. (No model.)
Be it known that we, CLARENCE J. NOEL and J osnrrr MAURER, citizens of the United States, residing at Marinette, in the county of Marinette and State of WVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in BindingOlamps for Receipt-Books, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in binding-clamps for receipt-books; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the binding-clamp applied to a rcceipt-book and embodying our improvements, showing the cover of the book and the leaves of the same open. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same, showing the book closed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line :10 a: of Fig. 1, showing the rear edge of the tablet of receipts and the clamping device therefor partly in section and partly in elevation. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective View of parts of the clamping-frame.
A represents a tablet of receipt-blanks, which are connected together at one edge by means of suitable staples, B, in the usual manner. Holes 0 are then punched through the secured edges of the receipt blanks, near the ends thereof. Each leaf of the book contains two tabular forms, which are intended to be properly filled out by the conductor, thus making a record of the moneys received. One of the forms is to be given to the passenger as a receipt.
L represents the binding or clamping device of the tablet, the construction of which is as follows:
M is a metallic strip of suitable length, breadth, and thickness, having arms N flexibly jointed to its ends, the said arms being each slightly shorter than onehalf the length of the strip M, so that they may be folded onto the said strip and arranged in line with each other, as shown in Fig. 1. At suitable distances from the ends of the strip M are formed studs 0, which are adapted to extend through the openings 0 in the tablet. Lugs or ears 1? are formed with the strip M, and are bent upward from the outer edge thereof, and are located at suitable distances from the ends of the strip, the said lugs serving to bear against the inner edges of the leaves which form the tablet. At suitable distances from the central portion of the strip M the same is provided with catches R, which first extend upward therefrom at its outer edge, and are then bent inward at right angles and caused to extend over the strip. The said strip M is further provided at suitable distances from its ends with eyes or openings S, for the purpose to be hereinafter described. After the tablet is sccured in position on the strip M by inserting the studs 0 of the said strip in the openings 0, and causing the inner edges of the leaves of the tablet to bear against the lugs P, the arms N are folded inward on the upper side of the tablet and have their outer ends engaged under the catches R, as shown in Fig. l, and thereby firmly securing the clamping device to the tablet.
T represents the cover, which is made of leather or other suitable flexible material, and comprises the sides U, the back V, the flexible strip W, to bear against the outer edge of the tablet, and the flap X, which folds over the back of the cover when the latter is folded over the tablet, as indicated in Fig. 2. The parts of the cover are preferably formed integrally, but may be formed separately if preferred. At one edge of the back V of the cover are made eyes or openings Y, which register with the eyes or openings S in the strip M when the tablet of receipts and stubs is placed in the cover, and a cord, wire, or tape, Z, is passed through the openings or eyes S and Y and secured so as to hold the clamp, and consequently the tablet, which is is attached thereto, firmly in the cover and prevent the same from dropping from the cover when the latter is open. The said cord, wire, or tape also permits the ready removal of the clamping device and the tablet from the cover when the receipt-blanks of the tablet have been exhausted and it is necessary to substitute a new tablet therefor.
The operation of our invention will be read ily understood from the foregoing description in connection with the drawings hereto annexed.
Having thus described our invention, we clain1-- 1. The binding-clamp comprising the strip M, the arms N, flexibly connected thereto and adapted to be folded over the strip, and the catches projecting from one edge of the strip and engaging over the free ends of the arms, as set forth.
2. The binding-clamp comprising the strip M, having the integral lugs P projecting from one edge, for the purpose set forth, the arms N, flexibly connected to the ends of the strip and adapted to be folded over the same in line with each other, and the catches to secure the free ends of the said arms to the strip when thus folded, substantially as described.
3. The binding-clamp for tablets, comprising the strip M, having the studs 0 to enter openings in the tablet, thelugs'P, to bear against the inner edge of the tablet, the arms N, fiexibly connected to the ends of the strip and adapted to fold over the same in line with each CLARENCE J. NOEL. JOS. MAURER.
