HINGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369.113, dated August 30, 1887.

hinge for removable box-covers, said hinge being rigidly secured to the cover, one leaf or partof the hinge forming a clamp to engage with the edge of a box.

To this end the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the hinge, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hinge. Fig. 2 is a section showing hinge as applied to a box and removable cover open. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of a boxcover closed. Fig. 4c is a perspective view from the inside with cover open.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A B represent the two portions or leaves of a hinge. The portion A consists of a wire staple, a, the ends of which are designed to be driven into the edge of a-removable cover, 0, as shown in Fig. 2, or in any other convenient manner for securing the parts together. The portion or leaf B consists of a wire bent into substantially the form shown around the bail of the staple a, forming a loop, I), and the arms 0.

D is a stop, which consists of a wire coiled upon the bail of the staple and formed .with a loop, d, at nearly right angles to the ends E of the wire, which are sufficiently long to rest against the loop I) of the part B of the hinge.

In practice, the part A having been secured to the cover, the edge of the box E is forced to engage with the part B of the hinge, and is clamped between the loop I) and arms 0 thereof, as shown.

When the cover is opened, the edge thereof rests upon the loop cl of the stop D, which prevents the cover from falling back.

If desired, the cover may be glazed, so as to display the contents of the box.

By this construction it will be seen that I provide an inexpensive but practicable hinge, by the use of which removable covers can readily be secured upon boxes and transferred from one box to another, as occasion may require.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a-hinge, the combination of the staple A with the loop b and arms 0, said loop and arms formed from one piece of wire and coiled upon the hail of the staple A, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. In a hinge, the combination, with the- 'wire staple A, of the leaf B, formed of wire coiled around the bail of the staple and provided with loop I) and arms 0, and the stop D, formed of a wire coiled upon the bail of said staple and provided with loop (I, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
