JOHN TURNER TROTTER, OF SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HOWARD SANDS EDWARDS, OF SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA.
HINGE.
Application filed September 1'7, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN TURNER TROT- ran, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hinges and refers more specifically to hinges intended for the covers of receptacles, such as boxes and the like.
One object of the invention is to constructa hinge provided with means acting in the nature of a corner brace to strengthen the connection bet-ween the walls of the receptacle with which the hinge is associated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hinge which may be cheaply constructed and which is exceedingly simple and durable and when secured in position will prevent the sides of the receptacle from splitting when the receptacle is opened and the lid falls back.
Other objects of the invention will be disclosed in the following specification.
The invention consists substantially in providing a leaf hinge with a flange adapted to be secured to one of the sides of the box acting not only as a brace for the box or receptacle but also as an additional securing means to hold the hinge itself in position.
The form of invention as at present preferred by me is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hinge secured in position on a. receptacle, the lid of which is open; and Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the hinge, the receptacle being shown closed and partially in section.
Referring by reference characters to the drawing, the numeral 3 designates one of the walls of the receptacle, for example, one of the end walls, at designates the rear side wall and 5 the cover. To one of the walls for example, that designated 4:, is secured the leaf 6 of the hinge which is preferably bent at an angle to form the short leaf 7, overlying the upper edge 8 of the wall 4, and to the cover 5 of the receptacle is secured the leaf 9 of the hinge, all the parts of the hinge being firmly held to their supports by screws 10 or their equivalents. As is usual in hinges of this form, the

leaves 6 and 9 are secured together by the knuckle 11 through which the pinti'e 12 passes.
The parts thus far described are of the usual or ordinary construct-ion and only form part of my invention so far as they constitute an element of the combination thereof.
To either of the leaves (3 or 9 and preferably to that designated 6, there is attached or integrally formed therewith a flange 12 which is preferably turned at right angles to the leaf 6 and is designed to be secured to one of the walls of the receptacle, as for example, the wall designated 3 in Fig. 1. This flange like the leaves is secured to its support by screws 10 or their equivalents.
It will be noted by the provision of the flange 12 that a corner brace is provided for the receptacle, the adjoining walls thereof being firmly united. Moreover the flange 12 provides additional anchorage means for holding the hinge itself in position and the lid 5 may be opened with considerable violence without displacing the 1 hinge or without loosening the screws 10.
It will be noted that the device is an exceedingly simple one which may be cheaply manufactured and which will find application in numerous connections.
While in the foregoing description, my invention has been referred to in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the scope of my invention is not to be limited by such details, but it is to be determined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a. receptacle and lid therefor, of a hinge for oining the lid to the receptacle, said hinge comprising the combination with a right angular leaf secured to one wall of the receptacle, a second leaf secured to the lid thereof, a joint between said leaves and a flange secured to said first mentioned leaf and extending at right angles thereto.
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN TURNER TROTTER.
