To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MATHEW I-I. SToLL, a

citizen of the United States, residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to hinges and particularly to box hinges.

The primary object of my invention is the provision of a very simple, easily made, and extremely effective hinge so constructed that when the hinge is in place it is practically impossible to open the knuckle formed on one of the leaves of the hinge and thus detaching the hinge leaves from each other.

A further object of the invention is to so construct the hinge that when the hinge is in place upon a box the joint formed between the extremity of the knuckle and the body of the leaf on which the knuckle is formed will be entirely concealed and so disposed as to make it impossible to insert a screw driver, chisel, or like implement into the said joint and open it.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a box and a lid therefor showing my improved hinge applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the two members of the hinge, and Fig. 3 is a face view of the hinge looking toward the bead 6.

Referring to these drawings, A designates a box of any suitable character, and B designates a cover of a box. My improved hinge comprises the leaf 2 which is adapted to be attached to the body of the box and the leaf 3 which is adapted to be attached to the lid of the box. The leaf 2 is formed of thin sheet metal angularly bent at one end as at 4.- and reduced in width at 5 and then bent around to form the knuckle 6. The

leaf 2 is inserted within the slot the leaves 2 and 3 will be held from relative lateral movement.

In practical use the leaf 2 is disposed on the inside face of the box A withthe angular portion 4 bearing against the edge of the box. The leaf 3 is disposed upon the inside face of the lid B adjacent the inner corner of the lid and with the obtusely angular portion 8 projecting slightly beyond the inner edge of the lid. The leaves are attached tothe box and lid in any desired manner so that they can be readily removed, and in assembling the parts, the tongues 5 are inserted through the slots 9 of the leaves 3 and the tongues 5 are rolled up to form the beads 6. The joint 7 between the knuckle 6 and the tongue 5 is disposed immediately adjacent to the edge of the box and in such position that it is practically impossible to force any instrument into this joint to open up the head. In other hinges of more or less the same character known to me it is possible to insert an instrument between the extremity of the leaf 3 and the under face of the tongue forming the knuckle 6 and then by twisting the instrument open up the knuckle, thus releasing the box cover so that the contents of the box may be removed without unlocking the box.

It will be seen that with my improved hinge it is impossible to get such access to the knuckle as will permit the insertion of an implement at the joint of the knuckle particularly when the lid is closed upon the body of the box.

It will be seen that my improved hinge may be very cheaply made, that the parts may be readily assembled and that the hinge is entirely elfective for the purpose designed.

Having described my invention what I claim is:

1. A hinge including two leaves, one leaf being angularly bent adjacent one end, said angularly bent portion being formed with a transversely extending slot, the other leaf at one end being right angularly bent to engage over the upper edge of the wall of a box and having a tongue projecting from said angularly bent end, the tongue having a width equal to the length of the slot formed in the other leaf, said tongue being inserted into the slot and being bent to form a knuckle, the extremity of the tongue when so bent abutting against the inside Copies of this patent may be obtained for face of the tongue at the base thereof and immediately adjacent said slot.

2. The combination with a container having an upwardly extending side wall and a v lid extending over and resting upon the upper edge of the side wall, of a hinge therefor comprising two leaves, one leaf being leaf being applied to the inner face of the lid and adapted to rest upon the angularly bent portion of the first named leaf, said second named leaf projecting beyond the lid and being angular-1y bent below the upper edge of the side wall and transversely slotted to receive the tongue of the first named leaf, said tongue extending through the angular portion of the second named leaf from the inside to the outside thereof and being bent downward and then upward upon the inside face of the angular portion of the second named leaf to form a knuckle, the extremity of the tongue abutting against the inside face of the tongue at the base thereof adjacent to the said slot.
