HINGE FOR GOLLAPSIBLE BOXES.
(No Model.)

| 1:21:11; co., woraumon WASH ITED STAT- s PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM VALENTINE LEONARD, OF PORTSMOUTH, ENGLAND.
HINGE FOR COLLAPSIBLE BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,178, dated May 23, 1893.
Application filed October 22, 1892. Serial No. 449,673- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM VALENTINE LEONARD, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residin g at Ashton House, Kingston Crescent, Portsmouth, in the county of Hants, England, have invented an Im provement in Hinges Applicable as a Connection for Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved form of hinge or connection for boxes, doors and for other purposes, and which may also be applied to the construction of collapsible boxes.
In carrying out my invention the hinge is formed from two strips of metal or other material bent or shaped into such a form, and situated so, that one part engages with the other and can be turned over on it, without becoming disengaged. \Vhen the hinges are to be connected together, one is slid intothe other from one end, thereby causing the bent edges to engage with each other, the hinge being disconnected by simply sliding the two sections apart. As applied to tin or other metal boxes, the back, to which the lid is to be attached, is bent over at the top, and the back of the lid is also bent into a corresponding shape, so that one part may be slid into the other. The hinge may extend for the whole length of the box or projecting parts may be formed on the back and lid, which are bent or formed into the required shape. In the use of wooden boxes, doors and other articles, the hinges are preferably separate and are screwed or otherwise fixed in the required position. One of the parts of the hinge may be formed with one end closed, so that theother part cannot slide through, but will rest against the end, thereby causing the parts to be connected more securely. Each side of the box may be formed in a similar manner or provided with connections of the form described, so that they are all connected together by simply sliding one part within the other, and disconnected by withdrawing one from the other.
course, require to be at two or more ends of each side, instead of at one as'in the lid. The box could thus be readily put together or taken apart when desired, the lid when fixed causing the sides to be secured in posi- The curved parts would, of.
tion firmly. In wooden boxes or boxes of other material than metal, the hinges may also be formed in one with the'sides andlid, if desired, but in most cases separate hinges of metal willbe employed for the sakeof strength.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, reference is had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sections of a box fitted with lid and hinge of my improved construction. Fig. 3 is a section of a hinge. Fig. 4 is a plan of a box or other article with separate hinges. Figs; 5 and 6 are detail views, and Fig. 7 is a sectionof a box, all the sides of which are fastened together by means of this connection.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, A is the back of the box, the upper end of which is turned over or bent into the curved part B, the lid 0 being also shaped at D to correspond so that one part may be slipped within the other as shown, and the lid raised as in Fig. 2,Wll3h out disengaging the parts. In this arrangement, applicable to tin, cardboard and other boxes, the hinge is formed in one with the back and top of the box, thus saving the trouble of attaching a separate hinge. The whole length of the box may be utilized, or two or more hinges may be formed in a similar manner.
The hinge shown in Fig. 3 is applicable to Wooden boxes, doors and other articles where separate hinges are required, the parts being fixed in place by means of the fiat strips B and D, by screws or otherwise.
Fig. 5 shows the part B provided with a closed end I), which is preferably employed when small hinges are used in order to prevent the other part from slipping through.
reversed in position, the lid part being within the other.
According to Fig. 7 the sides E of the box are each formed with curved ends B,the ends of one sliding within the other, as in the case of the hinges above described.
As will be seen the rolled or curled portions B, D, at the edges of the box parts are fitted to each other so that the outside portion has a slot 00, extending longitudinally of it to admit the curled or rolled portion of the other 99 In Fig. 6 the parts are similarly formed but ICO part and permit sliding movement of one upon the other. In the case of the hinge both portions of which have the longitudinal slot one part is permitted to turn within the other so that the lid may be swung back or closed and not be detached.
What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a box, the two parts having a joint between them, said joint consisting of the rolled or curled portions at their edges adapted to each other and adapted to permit longitudinal movement of one upon the other for connecting the parts in forming the joint substantially as described.
2. In combination, the two parts of the box having the joint between them consisting of the curled or rolled portions at their edges adapted to fit one within the other one of said rolled portions having a longitudinal slot or opening extending along it, substantially as described.
3. In combination, the box side and cover and the hinge joint comprising the rolled or curled portions at the edges of said parts each of which has aslot oropening extending along it to admit the rolled portion of the other part, substantially as described.
4. In combination, the two box parts having thejoint between them comprising the curled or rolled portion with a slot extending longitudinally thereof, said roll being closed at its end and the rolled portion of the other box part adapted thereto, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM VALENTINE LEONARD.
In presence of ALBERT EDWARD EUEN, ALFRED DARLEY BROWN.
